The Full Contact Martial Arts Association is proud to announce a seminar with David Wink. In addition to having studied Pekiti-tirsia under Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje Jr. and Pentjak Silat under Suyardi “Eddie” Jafri, David has refined his skills in over 20 years of full-contact fighting and developed a system that is based on reality instead of untested theory. Strategy and elegant techniques won’t stop an opponent intent upon closing to grappling range. You need enough power to devastate your opponent and stop them quickly. This type of power doesn’t come soley from physical strength; it requires proper body mechanics and body alignment. This one-day seminar will provide you with detailed instruction on how this type of power is generated, and specialized drills to help you develop it for stick, knife and empty hands. When: Saturday, March 25, 2000 from 10 am to 5pm with a 1-hour lunch break. Where: Central Maryland Martial Arts 6907 Baltimore National Pike, Unit#11 Frederick, MD. 21702 Phone: 301 - 473 - 8584 Cost: $45 per person, or $40 per person if payment received by March 15th. Variations of this >question keep coming up on the Internet martial arts discussion groups (like >Pekiti-Tirsia Digest and Eskrima Digest); This question has taken several >forms: Striking vs. Grappling, Mobility vs. Power, Offense vs. Defense, >Courage vs. Strategy. Valid arguments are offered on each side of these >debates. > >For our purposes here, I will divide the attributes or skills necessary for >fighting into the following categories: > >1. Footwork & body positioning (Mobility in your firing platform) >2. Flow (The ability to fluidity change from one technique to another) >3. Timing (The ability to do the right thing at the right time) >4. Striking (Delivering force) >5. Blocking* (Defending against force) * see note at end of article >6. Clinching (Including trapping) >7. Grappling (Both standing and on the ground) >8. Strategy (Your battle plan) >9. Courage (The ability to overcome fear in order to achieve your goal) >10. Aggressiveness (Your willingness to deliver punishment) > To my mind the answer to the initial question is simple and straightforward: No. 9 - courage. Without it one can possess all the other nine attributes which will be useless withou the courage to apply them. With courage one can make up for a lot of deficiencies. I would add also wisdom as no. 11. One needs it to know when to get into a fight and when to walk away. Come to think of it, one might need courage to do the latter, too... BTW, can one teach courage?? Mike Koblic, Quesnel BC ------------------------------ From: DojoDoor@aol.com Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 22:23:18 EST Subject: eskrima: Laws and Life I wanted to revisit a thread from a few days back. The issue of this guy at the party and getting attacked was addressed in several ways. Each considered the issue from the angle of what would happen to the person who jumped in to help this poor guy out. I feel we should consider what would happen if we did not jump in. How seriously would this guy get hurt and why? Also, if this guy is seriously injured or killed, what can we be charged with if we stood by and did nothing? ------------------------------ From: "John Taylor" Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2000 03:47:57 GMT Subject: eskrima: masters R.Saturno, Jr writes - " My question is, particularly upon reading recent postings about "Interviews with Masters" etc, how many genuine master instructors are really out there? This is simply a question to quell my personal curiosity." It raises an interesting question. How do we judge a master? By what standards? You don't have to be a master boxer, to be a master boxing coach. Take Cus D'amato. Not living in the USA, I have another tangent to add. Do we recognise FMA masters that live in other countries, that too were migrants from thier home country, with fighting talent? How much of being a master is getting the recognition of the U.S. martial arts industry - mag publishers, et al? Respectfully, John Taylor. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 20:10:45 -0800 (PST) Subject: [none] ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #106 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
