I recently posted about setting up a "rouges gallery" of digest members on my website. I've now got the site sorted and if anyone is interested then please read the following... 1. The gallery will be open to all digest members regardless of style, experience, instructors etc etc etc. 2. The gallery is intended to provide readers of the digest with BASIC background info (and maybe a thumbnail picture) of other digest readers so that names can be put to faces, questions directed to specific people, friends recognised at seminars etc etc etc 3. Admission to / Inclusion in the gallery will be FREE, but space might be limited so it will be first come first served - with 1100 digest members this thing could get BIG!. 4. NO Political bias will be given to ANY style OR individual - Placement within the gallery will be decided purely on Alphabetical order of given surnames. 5. Anybody is free to link to any gallery page or item (I'll even try and supply individual bookmarks) anywhere on the site - my only request is that you send a mail to links@techdojo.co.uk letting me know what and where - that way I can keep people updated if anything moves about. 6. I reserve the right to remove anybody from the gallery for any reason (generally for abuse or any misuse towards the project or the info it contains). 7. I shall endevour to respect everyones privacy. I promise NOT to disclose anyones email address or any other personal information supplied to any other third party (other than what is publicly available on the site). Please include a note if you DON'T wish your information to be added to my database for any future potential use. 8. Only the contents of the GALLERY PAGES (NOT the rest of the website) shall be considered public domain as to use by any third party - I haven't got the time to police any misuse of any data that is freely given by others. 9. No information will be added that is considered slanderous to any third party. 10. It is assumed that all information given is correct - (If mr X says he trained with master Y for Z years then who am I to argue). Comments regarding the content of third party entries should be directed towards the third party NOT to me! Just like the Grand Poohbah - I will be giving my time, energy and webspace free gratis to this project - so if anyone actually wants to be included in the gallery can they please follow the following (simple) instructions. i). Send me an email at rouges@techdojo.co.uk - thats it! Seriously, drop me a line at the above address with whatever info you want included, ie. Name (duh!), aliases, style(s) practised, instructors, experience level, a link to your own home page (if applicable) / email address and possibly a SHORT paragraph with some background info. I realise that English may not be the first language for many members but unfortunatly it's the only one I can accept submissions in. If you want the world to see what you look like, then attach a thumbnail image file in either gif or jpeg format - Please keep the images to a reasonable size as I still have to pay to download my email 8-( max size about ~6k NOTE - I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO RESIZE ANY IMAGES, EDIT OR SHORTEN ANY TEXT TO FIT WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS OF MY SITE, IF ANYBODY IS UNHAPPY WITH THE FINAL RESULT PLEASE CONTACT ME AND WE'LL TRY AND SORT SOMETHING OUT. I'm making no promises as to how long it will take to add an individual entry only that I will be doing my best to fit the job in as and when, and I'll reply directly to people when their entry is online. Thats all folks - but please remember send submissions to rouges@techdojo.co.uk NOT the digest or else Ray might start to get most unhappy 8-) Mabuhay ang eskrima! Well, somehow this weak soldiers managed not only to to invade the Philippines, but also to mantain them under control for nearly four hundred Years ;-). Maybe your strong farmer was looking the other way when this happened ;-))) > I would like to hear Marc MacYoung (animal) comment here. Me too, but there is also a comment from John Clement somewhere on the HACA website on this very topic. In a nutshell: a) The spanish soldiers DID invade the Philippines b) They did NOT go around for four hundred years with firearms and in strict battle formation. So they were bound to have fought sword vs. bolo a lot of times c) FMA have incorporated a lot of techniques from old western fencing, especially espada y daga, because the philippinos found them "effective". For more details, see the article by Clement himself.;-) I would like to add another question by myself: Does anyone on the list know the Video "The Blow by Blow guide to Swordfighting in the Renaissance Style" by Mike Loades? It's about old european rapier and dagger techniques. It is intended mainly for actors of shakespearean plays, but Loades attempted to use "realistic and historic" techniques, and I think he did a very good work. If you suppress some advices designed solely for the security of the actors (i.e. attacking and blocking out of distance or out of line) there remains a lot of usefull stuff... One of which would be the the negation of footwork. With that in mind, I think one would rely upon good body angling to minimize the targets of attack, and good use of both free hands. I think the principles remain pretty much the same as in a stand-up encounter, just being on the ground reduces the margin of error a little bit. Body angling, great parries, and some basic disarms are your best friend in such a situation IMHO. I look forward to some other opinions on this subject. No offense intended, but it seemed to me, that conditioning was not the only reason, why Magellan was defeated.
