On rec-ma, some one posted a question regarding learning knife fighting through video. The following was Tuhon McGrath's response. I think it demonstrates what kind of man Tuhon is: <<billmcgrath@my-deja.com Date: 3/7/00 6:36 PM Central Standard Time Message-id: <8a47al$hvc$1@nnrp1.deja.com> You're almost always better off with a competent live instructor, but if you must try to learn knife fighting techniques from a video, I recommend Ron Balicki's knife tapes. You'll see good basics and shouldn't pick up any bad habits. Ron is Dan Inosanto's son-in-law, so he has gotten Guro Dan's material right from the source. You'll find Ron's ad in Inside Kung-Fu magazine under "Point Man Productions". His phone # is (310) 530-6753. Ron also has a web site at: http://marsystems.com I myself have a series of knife videos. If you are wondering why I am not recommending my own tapes, I only sell my knife tapes to members of my organization (Pekiti-Tirsia International) and only then as a review once they have the basics of the technique down. If you are interested in attending one of my seminars, you'll find a list of my upcoming seminars on my web site: www.pekiti-tirsia.com You should also consider getting a group together for sparring practice. My group goes full contact with fencing masks, light street hockey gloves and wooden dowels for knives. Good technique alone won't help much if you don't also have good timing, aggression and other skills you can only get from sparring. Regards, Tuhon Bill McGrath >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Both Tuhon and Guro Ron are pure class. Ron Balicki has been especially helpful to me when I recently considered getting out of martial arts due to all the back stabbing there is. Guro Ron has motivated me to the point where my school is now doing better, I am competing in BJJ and have attracted sponsors, and I am bringing my stickfighting back up to my standards. So I want to publicly say: Thanks Ron! Alvis W. It is the book entitled "MGA KARUNUNGAN SA LARONG ARNIS" or Techniques in the Game/Sport of Arnis, by Placido Yambao, a Filipino grandmaster. The book was written/published in 1959 and I am just wondering if someone in the FMA community both in the USA and the Philippines still has a copy of this great seminal book on the FMA. I can be reached at leoangelo@lawyer.com Thank you. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Elrik said: "IMHO Serrada and Kali Ilustrisimo encompass the same body of techniques at the advance level with the difference being structural alignment, mental intent, and weapon distinction based on the weapon being used." Added to that, Maha Guro Uddin demonstrated to us one day that at those higher levels Elrik spoke of, there really is no clear distinction between the different "styles". Combat is combat and the art has no name. I agree with that. As for the weapons, Maha Guro Uddin suggested to me that I cut a yakal stick at 25" in length and learn how to use that weapon in Serrada movements. He said that Serrada means "close quarter", not small weapon. With that, regardless of weapon size, you should be able to adapt to combat, whether Serrada or Kali Illustrisimo as your foundation. Maha Guro Uddin said that the family style of Illustrisimo Eskrima is closest to the higher levels of Serrada he learned from the late GM Angel Cabales in comparison to all the other styles he's seen and tested. I can't imagine that they would still be available directly, particularly in light of the fact that on Fong's Koinonia web site, only Rene Latosa's videos are available. Does ANYBODY have any input on how I might get my hands on any of the original Angel Cabales videos? Please email me. Mabuhay Ang Eskrima! R.
