I have extensive experience with misaligned hips due to my knee injury of 1992. I had to spend the better part of a year off my left leg including 6 weeks in a wheel chair and ever since then I have been plauged with alignment issues in the hips, which for me usually manifest in the sacrum. I would offer these thoughts: Chiropractic can be great (no surprise that it was a C. who came up with the diagnosis) BUT IMHO most Cs have tunnel vision on the bones. I would suggest that you spend even more time on the muscles-- which are what pull the bones out of place. The muscular-skeletal system is a marvel of tensegrity (look it up-- its a cool concept). Many Cs will gladly spend years adjusting you-- and it does bring relief-- but in my experience you need to get to the muscles and postural issues involved. I would suggest that you also consider the effects of things like sitting, driving, using toilets (as vs. squatting in nature) etc. none of which were part of the human evolutionary experience and all of which have a quite profound effect on the hips-- tilting them forward. This occurs as certain muscles spend inordinate amounts of time in certain positions with the consequence of shortening and of weakening. Specfically you will want to stretch and strengthen in the extended position: a) the ilio, the psoas (your hip flexors- look at anatomy chart) b) your quads. Most people do not appreciate that the quads cross the hip joint and contribute to hip flexion. Most people do not realize that their quads are tight. Think of the yoga position "The Archer" c)quadratus lumborum-- roughly from the crest of the hip to the ribs. d) the hamstrings e) the calves-- I don't know why but this really helps. My favorite why of doing this is to get in a leg extension machine and put just two plates each side and place the ball of the foot on the pushing surface and allow the weight to ctretch the calves. A slight bend of the knees will protect the ligaments in the back of the knee from stretching. I'll sit there for 1-5 minutes breathing. When you get up this one feels great! -- especially in the lower back. You will want to strengthen ISOMETRICALLY IN THE POSITION OF PEAK CONTRACTION a) your glutes b) your hamstrings. Most people do not appreciate that one head of the ham crosses the hip joint. To get peak contraction of the ham you need to both bend the knee and extend the hip at the same time. The best way I know of to get these two at the same time is to lie in Sphinx (face down, elbows under shoulders with palms flat, ankles and knees pressed together, butt thrusting hip into floor (think sending the last inches home and you'll have it ;-}) and then bend at the knee and bring the heels towards the butt. Go carefully, most people will bump up against where the muscle wants to spasm. Breathe and go into it. Connect with your mind and find where the opposing muscles, the quads, are tight and release the mental signal that has been holding them tight. As you do this, pull with your forearms on the floor so as to lengthen the front of the hip (NOT compress lower back) As you do these things, your hips will begin to level on the front-back plane. Your ab work will now have greater result because it is not fighting gravity. For me I prefer the ab-straps to hang from a chinning bar to a) a bring the knees up into a fetal curl and b) knee to opposite elbow. I believe the forgoing plan of attack to be very effective. As your hips level, your rate of progress with your knee should improve quite a bit. As for levelling on the lateral plane (a.k.a. left-right) I would suggest that you look into your hip rotators (rotation of the femur in the hip socket) This is more than I know how to describe, so find somebody who can help you with this. In the meantime, don't sit on your wallet. And, I don't know if you have any in a backwater like Detroit ;-) but if you can find someone who is qualified in Pilates you may be very pleasantly surprised with the results. > For you medically enhanced people out there I have what might sound like > a weird question, I know what you're thinking weird from > Rocky....Never!!! > Any ways like I said I was born with a flat left foot, and I know that > they say that many of the kidney points go thru the bottom of the feet. > Could this have anything to do with my left kidney never growing much > larger than a 5 year olds. Silverman" Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 18:12:41 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Question regarding Females... Greetings All~ I am currently trying to build the female student count at our academy. For some strange reason, we have always only had one or two women at any given time. Women are always treated the same as any student at our school...with respect. Our curriculum has a very heavy emphasis on FMA as well as Grappling. In fact, each of the women that have attended the school have become very talented competition grapplers. It seems logical to me that women who are interested in learning self defense skills, MUST learn to deal with weaponry as well as the groundfighting. Here's my question: Do you have any ideas about how to help grow my female student count? I am not talking about opening up a new cardio kickboxing class....my goal is to draw more women into our Doce Pares Eskrima class as well as our Grappling class. All help is greatly appreciated! On Saturday March 25, and for at least one month thereafter, I will be teaching the first class of Dog Brothers Martial Arts open to the general public. The class will begin at 1:00 and will be held at "Rigan Machado's BJJ School" in Torrance, CA. BTW, this is not a "class for the bad-ass". It is not just a stickfighting class. It is about training to be a warrior for all your days and to be able to manifest the promise of the FMA to operate with what the environment offers as well as what you might have handy. There will be staff, stick, knife, and empty hand. It is for all levels. Bring your toys and a good attitude. Guro Crafty DBIMA Rigan's school is located on the southwest corner of Hawthorne Bl. and 190th Street behind the McDonalds. ------------------------------ From: "Michael Koblic" Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 17:12:43 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Thanks Many thanks to all those who offered me training facilities in or around Anaheim, CA.
