I may carry extra weight but am quite > muscular. > Rocky Oh Rocky, you big, sensitive, manly, muscular man ;-) the point is not muscles or not, it is the effect that that they have on posture that I am talking about. The cumulative effect of sitting, cars, toilets, etc is to cause the muscles to pull on the hips in a way that tilts them. When the hips are not aligned correctly, the knee becomes stressed-- and in the case of injury, recovery is longer and less complete. As a yoga teacher I know says, "Knees are the escape valve for hips." The purpose of the routine is to restore posture, not to make bigger muscles. If for example, as is the case with some 95%+ of the male population, (women seem to be much less affected by this) the ilio-psoas are shortened from the unnatural effects of excessive sitting, the hip tilts forward even when one is standing. Equally important in this dynamic is that the opposing muscle, the butt, even though it may be genetically big and strong, in most cases does not perform peak contraction well. The belly sags as the viscera, pulled by gravity, spill forward, and the lower back (quadratus lumborum) are in a perenially shortened position and consequently tighten up etc etc. Using the hard wiring of the body's system to trigger the release of the ilio-psoas (and the portion of the quads that cross the hip joint too) by working an isometric contraction the opposing muscles--of the butt and ham strings-- in their position of complete contraction (the position where all fibers of the muscle are activated BTW) as I described helps level the hips. This is especially effective when followed by a good ab routine. With the hips level, the stress on the knee is reduced and the recovery process improves-- often dramatically. Mr. Koblic asked if an Escrima expert should be on McSorley's defense team. I would hope that no one here would entertain such a thought. What McSorley did was commit a henious act of violence that in some states, John Q. Citizen would be serving 5 to 10 years for. How would you defend such a blatant brutal assault? He lost his cool and swung out of frustration? That's a great excuse. I don't hardly think so. This is an opportunity to send a message to the rest of the professional sports world. McSorley should be prosecuted to the fullest and banned from the NHL for life.
