I would imagine that the women that have stayed with the Doce Pares classes were more aggressive then the most women. it takes aggressiveness to hold a weapon, also its hard for most women I believe to justify learning weapons when they don't see how it can be used in everyday life and on the streets. Most women would think to themselves ok so I am out on the street and I know how to use a stick. but its not like the majority of them are going to have one on them. or think that its going to be likely that they would find one lying around just when they needed it. So you need to bring practicality into the picture and access. Ever try taking a walking stick and using it as a single stick in front of female students and showing them that they can walk with it or an umbrella when there on the streets and that there armed at all times? Practicality is essential in a women's life most of the time. We have way too many responcabiltys and have to make sure that everything fits in its place. It's the way we are taught growing up. Also women learn differently then men do. Men tend to be more visually orientated, they are more visual learners: Seeing a tech. Demonstrated is most times all that is necessary for a male student. A women on the other hand tends to be more of an auditory learner.they will better understand how to learn by hearing it described as well as demonstrating it. taking the time to give them practical reasoning on why they should use it and how it can be adapted into everyday life. Again Practicality. These of coarse are just the views and experience of a women who fell in love with the art and has had to struggle to find the best way I could learn the things I wanted to. I walk with a walking stick or cane every day and I am always armed. And its legal. Andrew ------------------------------ From: Steve Klement Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 08:19:42 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Hockey Strike Mr. Clancy, I believe you may have misunderstood the initial question Mr. Koblic posted: "Here is the question: Leaving aside the moral content of such action and forgetting for a moment the end-result (Donald Brashier ended up with a serious concussion), just observing Marty McSorley swing his stick from the point of view of an experienced stick fighter, was he trying to hurt Donald Brashier seriously or was he just "trying to get his attention"?" After watching the video clip several times (downloaded MPEG from CNN) I have come to the conclusion that the strike was a bit more than trying to get the attention of Donald Brashier but not intended to be lethal either. The strike was an upward motion from hip to target (Brashier's head) more like a (excuse the phrase) bitch slap than a "knock you out" right cross. Also, Marty McSorley did not wind up (hip rotation etc.) for the strike. So I really feel McSorley was not trying to lethally hurt Brashier. How much trouble should he be in? Well, I just don't know. My wife's cousin is going to prison for a long long time for jabbing a guy that fell and hit the sidewalk and died from the head injury. Crap happens and if you initiate it you better be prepared to pay the dues. Mr. Clancy, please don't get me wrong. I don't condone what McSorley did. I just wanted to clarify the question and pose my answer. - -- Steve Klement Inayan School of Eskrima inayan@mindspring.com www.shoponthenet.com/Inayan From: JDClan57@aol.com Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 21:55:08 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #136 This is in response to Mr. Koblic's question regarding McSorley, the hockey player turned "gladiator on ice." Mr. Koblic asked if an Escrima expert should be on McSorley's defense team. I would hope that no one here would entertain such a thought. What McSorley did was commit a henious act of violence that in some states, John Q. Citizen would be serving 5 to 10 years for. How would you defend such a blatant brutal assault? He lost his cool and swung out of frustration? That's a great excuse. I don't hardly think so. This is an opportunity to send a message to the rest of the professional sports world. McSorley should be prosecuted to the fullest and banned from the NHL for life.
