What McSorley did was commit a henious act of > violence that in some states, John Q. Citizen would be serving 5 to 10 years > for. How would you defend such a blatant brutal assault? John Q Citizen would also serve time for checking someone into the boards, or for smashing a slap shot at him. The game is hockey, and it does have deliberate physical violence built into it, by design, including some de facto standards for "harrassing" other players with your stick. That means, unfortunately, that there is also a niche in hockey where goons can be effective, who are therefore even sought out by some teams. I personally prefer the games in which the violence is used in a way that I can only describe as "appropriate". Sometimes the line is pretty fine. McSorley pretty obviously went beyond that. But apparently he seems not to have intended to mess up the other guy as badly as he did. He deserves some kind of censure from the sport. Maybe a long suspension. That's all. It's an ugly moment for hockey, especially for us Bruins fans. 'nuff said. These are people who get killed during a driveby but were not the target." Next reply: Now that doesn't hold water. It was the intent that we were talking about, not the target. The intent of your so-called gangism was to kill. The target you speak of is side-dressing to the argument (discussion). If a gangmember shoots an innocent bystander then he should fry EXACTLY the same that he should if he killed his intended victim...no more no less. But I digress...you have drawn me into the side-dressing also. We are made by our actions and McSorley is a may be a buttmunch, and he needs to be punished for illegal checking or sticking, but he doesn't need to be punished for cracking the ice. Patrick N. Of course it ineluctably follows that it triggered various commentaries. ;-) Herewith mine: First a point about reasoning. Showing an exception does not disprove a generality. Men are taller than women, yet Janet Reno is taller (and uglier) than most men. So what? Most men are still taller than most women-- and most women prefer men taller and stronger than them. Second, the human animal by nature requires nuture. It is only natural that the nuture be in accordance with its nature. To blame the differences on socialization still begs the point-- for parents will socialize their children to best succeed in carrying on their genes. As noted in the biological principle, "Ontogeny recapitulates philogeny"-- the life of the individual, beginning in the womb, recapitulates the evolution of the species. For all the tremendous varieties of human social organization, there are certain themes to what you will see and certain things you will not see. Although we no longer live in the environment of our evolutionary history and the men no longer hunt the buffalo or defend territory from other bands and the women don't have to gather between nursings of their babies (hell, these days they don't even have to take care of them!) in my opinion for most people I believe the greater happiness can be found by living in some sort of poetic metaphor for our life when we were in nature, instead of over it. Of course there will be deviation from the norm. Being a deviant myself, I have nothing against this. But to try to live ruled by the chatter of the talking heads of our political class? No! There is great poetry and magic in life and to my way of thinking as long as there is martial in the art then there will be more men than women in the martial arts and this is is perfectly OK. Woof, Crafty Dog ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 01:24:07 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: Re: Men and women in classes I think that the student also needs to realize where he or she wants to go. Instructors should encourage their students to explore this. Is the person training for "self-defense" or "fighting"? Men usually have to defend against someone punching or jabbing him. The majority of instances when men are involved with a physical confrontation it is dealing with strikes. Of course, men can and do deal with grabs and chokes also(although probably not as much as strikes), which is why it is usually also taught after the strikes. Both are important to learn, but they are taught in practical steps of importance. But whose "importance" is it, the instructor or student? This is why most of the MA classes place main focus on dealing with "strikes", be it with or without weapon(s). Women do not usually have to deal with this type of aggression. They usually have to deal with grabs or chokes. This is also why most of the "women's self-defense" classes deal with grabs, chokes, etc., etc. Some schools place main focus on "stickfighting" or "dualling" when maybe women are not so much interested in those aspects. Of course some are, but instructors should ask the student what they are looking for. I make a list for my students listing different skills in two list. One list is my opinion of the order of skills that need to be focused on for a person to become a "fighter". The second list is one that I consider for a person to become a "technician". The student is encouraged to use both list and build his or her own list of importance in what they want to become and where they want to go. We than sit down and talk about it. I teach the same material to everyone in the class, give individual attention wherever needed, but the student has a clear and set mind of which "part" of the lesson they need to pay attention to, because they "know" where they want to go. Please take note of words like "most", "usually", "majority", "maybe", and any others you may see before replying. In trying to be P.C., I am reminded of a saying I once saw on a shirt: "My indeciseveness may (or may not) be the source of my problems." Sometimes it feels like you're writing a legal document. ===== "Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor" Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
