Herman well, but amongst my memories was the night he let every and any one at the Inosanto Academy get a lock on him to their satisfaction and then escaped from it. In my case I took an armbar (the one you get to when you spin from mount ). He let me snug it up to my satisfaction, asked me if I was ready, and then escaped with ease in about four seconds. He did this with everyone there. He had an unusually good aura. Bummer. William Schultz ------------------------------ From: "william schultz" Date: 24 Mar 2000 16:44:42 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Teddy & Sticks Greetings. My wife is currently reading an 895 page book on Teddy Roosevelt. She pointed me to a couple of passages she thought I might find interesting. The first passage indicates that he was into stick fighting. It doesn't describe the type of stick fighting other then referring to it as singlestick. ...Hiking, however, even in Roosevelt's take-no-prisoners mode, lacked the zing of more bellicose pursuits. When the opportunity arose, he liked to stick-fight with Leonard Wood. At first the two former comrades-in-arms used relatively light sticks; when these kept splintering, they switched to stouter ones. Thereafter, it was calcium that shattered instead of cellulose; one especially sharp blow broke Roosevelt's right arm. "I have had to temporarily stop singlestick with General Wood," the president recorded sheepishly. He took up singlestick again once his bone mended, and on off days he boxed with young military officers... Also, ...Upon hearing that the (Naval) academy was dropping some of the martial arts from the curriculum, he quickly contacted the secretary of the Navy to register his concern. "I am not satisfied with the giving up of Judo or Jujitsu at the Naval Academy," he declared. "It is not physical exercise so much as it is an extraordinarily successful means of self-defense and training in dexterity and decision." Naturally the old fogies who knew nothing about it opposed it. "I knew enough of boxing, wrestling, rough-and-tumble fighting, and of the very art in question to be absolutely certain that it is of real and on occasions may be of great use to any man whose duties are such as a naval officers may at any time become."... Does anyone have any idea what type of stick-fighting they are referring to? Thanks in advance, William Schultz PCMA/MCAC ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 19:15:28 -0800 (PST) Subject: [none] ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #146 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
