Similar? Different? > My impression is that there will be some similarities, but that you'll actually see more parallels between the single stick and FMA ,and then canne and some Japanese hanbo/jo forms. Just my impression. Disclaimer: I don't actually study either. As mentioned, single stick is essentially saber/sabre fencing (originaly military, not sport), modified into a sport, for tests of manhood and the like. Later, as actual combat usage of the sabre became more and more unlikely for the average upper-class man, they added more rules, such as the emphasis on the head break, the occasional binding of wrists, or feet in place, etc. There was similar, and probably mutually influencing movement within many German and Austrian schools/sects of the sword. Many originally viable contests devolved into tests of "courage", where the players would essentially stand in place, and hit each other with very little skill, and no defensive technique whatsoever. In fact, the point was mostly to earn yourself a good facial scar on your left side, while giving the other guy a good one. The chicks (apologies, Roaring girls) digged it. Honestly. My impression of Canne now is that it was originally a specialization of Savate, or Boxe Francaise, french kickboxing. Some schools thought it was popular to make it it's own stand alone art. IMO, I'm sure it was once quite effective, and I'm sure there are still people teaching the original art, but most Canne now is more based on looks and sporting forms than tactical usage (like some Savate). Worthy of note is the fact that original Canne actually used several different sizes of sticks, ranging from escrima size (le petit baton), all the way to full walking staff sizes. Is it proper for >a beginner to start immediately with bahi sticks >instead of rattan sticks? Tuhon McGrath once wrote somthing to the likes of...light rattan sticks when sparring with friends, heavier ones when sparring with acquaintences(sp), and kamagong or bahi with those you don't know. Don't remember it exactly. Anyways, maybe he can find it and run a part of that article. >And also, is it OK for a would be escrimador to study >once a week or twice a month (every 15 days) with an >instructor and then to practice with himself/a >training buddy I think the homework is the most important part of the MA. That's how James and I have progressed. In a two year period, we missed about 10 nights, but practiced every night from about 11:00 pm 'till 4 or 5 am in the morning. Thank you for your answers...... :) >> I used to tell my students that class wasn't the place for practice, it was the place to learn. Do your best to absorb what you can from your teacher during the limited time you have with him/her, (emphasis on quality rather than quantity at these times), get what he is trying to convey to you down as pat as you can, then work it to death with your partner. Your desire will sustain you if you have a good partner, and make the most of the time you have with your teacher.
