There are still a few articles and such left to add, but it is basically ready to go. Some of the history, especially of the Cebu/Visayas area eskrima community, may be new information for many, so take a look. I welcome comments and if anyone wants to make suggestions for improvements, feel free. Hopefully, as I learn more how to do things, the site will expand. http://www.geocities.com/eartes/KBS_System_index.html Steve ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 02:56:29 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Ode to one tough 90 year old This was sent to me by a student. LET IT REALLY SINK IN... THEN CHOOSE HOW YOU START YOUR DAY TOMORROW... Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" Michael replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, Mike, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life. "Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested. "Yes, it is" Michael said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life." I reflected on what Michael said. Soon thereafter, I left the tower industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it. Several years later, I heard that Michael was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back. I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied. "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon to be born daughter, " Michael replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live." "Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Michael continued, "...the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read "he's a dead man." I knew I needed to take action." "What did you do?" asked. "Well there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Michael. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. "Yes, I replied" The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and I yelled, "Gravity." Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead." Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything. "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34 You have two choices now: 1. Delete this. 2. Forward it to the people you care about. I hope you will choose #2. I did. ------------------------------ From: Sidney525@aol.com Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 08:34:03 EST Subject: eskrima: Deterring roberies? Our accountant from our business was robbed once several months ago, and they tried the same thing unsuccesfully yesterday. Here is their modus operandi. On fridays he goes to the bank which is say a 10 minute drive from the business, on the busy north side of Chicago through urban traffic. He gets followed by a car, who go alongside of him and shoots out his tire by either a blowgun or zip gun. The first time this happened, he got out to see what happend to the tire, and left the money in the car, and the "bad guys" went into the car and grabbed the money. When this happenned again yesterday, he did the smart thing, & kept on driving 'til he got to our business's parking lot, and he just ran inside and called the police money in hand. They followed him all the way to the parking lot. (Of course I had just been in the parking lot myself 10 minutes prior to that with sticks & machete available in my car, I always miss all the fun) When the police came, they said they couldn't file a report because no money was taken, so a crime wasn't really commited. My question is the following, while I don't think it is possible to always stop crime, I think it is possible to deter it. Our accountant does take different color cars to the bank, and does slightly vary his route, and can go at different times of the day, but what else can he do? I mentioned to him I can start riding shotgun with him in his vehicle, or I am better off taken my own vehicle and following him? If those of you on the digest, espeicailly with law enforcement knowledge (hint, hint Ray Terry Tuhon McGrath) have any suggestions. I don't it is neccesary to hire a security guard to go along with him, I just want to make him a "tougher target" Thanks Sid Filipino Kali-Eskrima Academy of Chicago ------------------------------ From: Kautz.Kraft@t-online.de (Michael Kautz) Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 15:47:49 +0200 Subject: eskrima: Mike Inay in Karlsruhe/Germany The EKAEF-Group of the "Polizeisportverein" (Police Sports Club) Karlsruhe /Germany presents: Kadena de Mano with SURO MIKE INAY Knife and Empty Hands Date and place: Polizeisportverein Karlsruhe, Southwest-Germany, April, the 25th, 6-9 pm contact: Michael Kautz e-mail Kautz.Kraft@t-online.de I would like to organize a seminar or more with "Animal" Mc Young in germany, who wants to join, and how can i manage this?
