(though the wallet could be used as well). It can be used as far more than just a distraction (same with a book). Granted, with the jewel case, you're likely only going to get one hit with it because it will shatter (but that's not necessarly a bad thing). However, with the jewel case or a book, hitting with the spine will hurt (though it may not do any real damage). Ever dropped a book (even a softcover) on your toe and had the spine hit first ... hurts like hell. Test it out, take a book and crack yourself on the forearm with the spine ... it hurts. Now imagine that shot (from either the book or the jewel case) in the throat ... you're talking potential damage, not just pain. However, the distraction factor is there as well ... throw the case/book at them and they will (usually) reflexively flinch/block/dodge during which time you might be able to get away or take the fight to them. Ray ========================================================================= Forwarded message: From: "Dave Miller" Subject: info Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 04:24:31 MST Ray Terry, I would like to request that you post the following notice in your next Eskrima Digest. Thank you for your consideration. Dave Miller I would like to give notice of a seminar coming to Flagstaff, AZ. It will be held on April 15, 2000 (10:00am to 2:00pm) at the Rolle Activity Center (Northern Arizona University, South campus). In a repeat performance, Rocky Pasiwk and Hal Edwards will be giving a seminar on the fundamentals of the Philippine martial arts. Mr. Pasiwk has been the personal student of Remy Presas for many years and learned from both of Maranga’s and Moncol’s Balintawak styles, as well as Modern Arnis. Also included in Mr. Pasiwk’s experience is training in various other Philippine arts, the earliest being Pekiti Tersia Arnis in 1975. In 1983, Mr. Pasiwk was one of the first Philippine martial artists to be invited to introduce the art in Europe. The Swedish government authorized the training he provided in several cities in that country. Although primarily a Philippine martial artist, Mr. Pasiwk’s training also includes experience in Western boxing, Ukrainian wrestling, Tang Soo Do, Moo Duk Kwan and Wing Chun Do. Mr. Edwards is only the second American authorized to teach traditional Balintawak and is the personal student of Ted Buot. He has also been the personal student of Rocky Pasiwk and Remy Presas since 1982. In 1985, and again in 1986, Mr. Edwards accompanied Remy Presas and Rocky Pasiwk on extended tours organized to demonstrate and teach Philippine arts in Europe. In addition to training in traditional, neo-traditional and modern Philippine martial arts, Mr. Edwards’ training also includes Tae Kwon Do, Chung Do Kwan and Judo. This class is four hours of stick training, taking away your opponents stick, hand-to-hand (close in) combat, grappling, and much more. Participants should expect to be involved the whole time. Sticks will be available for purchase at the clinic.
