Anything you can hold can be a weapon. You can > use the case to make your opponent to flinch then follow up with an attack Holding a book with two hands and using the one of the four corners as the point of the weapon you can use a two hand thrust forcing the corner into the face, or other soft areas. The whole book can be used as a shield to block an incoming blow. The edge that can be opened can be used as a very effective blocking device against incoming kicks or punches. On this "side" of the book you have two thin edges which could cause some damage to an incoming shin or arm. The corner of a CD case could be used by one hand to soft areas of your oppenants body, but expect to only get one or two hits out of it before it breaks in your hand. It can also be used at close distance like a shurakin (spelling). Its purpose would not be to injure but merely to distract for you to follow with some other weapon (empty hand or otherwise) > Someone else asked: > Can anyone suggest some sort of padding you can wear under your clothes if > you suspect you may be a victim of a knife attack? Magazines wrapped around the wrists and held in place by electrical tape or duct tape can make effective (Arnis). Magazines stuffed into the belt under your shirt and held in place by tape can also be effective in protecting some vital areas. (Do not sacrifice too much movement by too many magazines. (See the marital art magazines are good for something ; ) Of course these are for times when you would be expecting trouble. but if you are expecting trouble, you should be looking for ways to completely avoid it. A tightly rolled magazine could be an effective "blocking" weapon against a knife. As for the targets most vulnerable, pick up a copy of Rex Applegates book. We make great use of the shoulder in close, gripping the back of the head and pulling the face into the shoulder for a slam to the nose before finishing with an elbow. He already visited the local jujitsu school and met the woman there who runs it like the dojo of the 60s -- you know, out of touch with today's reality. My student is well-rounded combatively from handguns to knife work to traditional arts. Any good referrals for any challenging training will be greatly appreciated. (...and earn you a complimentary class with us when you visit NYC.) [Actually, you all have a standing invitation whenever you like.] Thanks, James Loriega New York Ninpokai >> There was a guy named Paul Morrero in Scottsdale. He taught Mande Muda (and maybe some other things as well). I met him at a seminar with Herman Suwanda. He seemed very knowledgeable and very practical. I don't know if he's still teaching. If you can find him, though, he'd be worth checking out. The number I have for him is (602) 483-2460.
