Tatang Ilustrissimo loved to use his shoulder as a fulcrum for disarms, hits, off balancing, and if you strayed to close he would also hit you with it (if he hadn't hit you with his weapon first). Just curious. Thanks. JRM >> I haven't had the opportunity to meet or see any videos of Mr. Balicki. I'll be sure to pick one up soon. My opinion is limited because I've only seen videos (of Inosanto and various Inosanto Blend Instructors and Students), watched a couple classes at the academy (beginning & advanced) and worked over some knife drills with an Inosanto Trained instructor whose last name is Rawlins (He's originally from St. Luis. I believe Guro Crafty would know him from the Inosanto Academy. Extremely enthusiastic and fun guy to work out with). The point is being a spectator of a system is different then being a practitioner. While not a formal student of Umpad's Corto Cadena System I do consistently cross train with practitioners of that system and have incorporated some of the footwork drills into my curriculum. So I have more of an insiders view of this system. The key difference from my perspective is the emphasis on footwork flow drills and structural alignment angling from day one in Umpad's teaching method. From what I have seen, the Inosanto blend blade work puts the initial emphasis on weapon and hand coordination. Umpad's teaching method, while also having a seminar (group teaching) format, gets refined via one-to-one private instruction. It's in his private instruction that many of his spatial and angling relationship gems come forth. I base this assertion on what I've seen in his private students/instructors. IMO the forte of his system are the drills and distinctions he has around evading, angling, and footwork. While it exist after putting the time in, the majority of Inosanto blend practitioners that I have seen have a hard intent and muscular tension in their applications (especially at the point of contact). As if muscular tension was the best or only expression of martial realism. All of Umpad's students are taught to relax at the point of contact from day one similar to the emphasis in Kali Ilustrisimo and Chinese Internal martial arts. I know that the Inosanto blend has a strong Pekiti Tirsia and Lameco influence now so maybe I just haven't seen the softer side of their blade work. Come to think of it all the Villabre-Largusa system Instructors that I have worked with also have a soft intent to their blade work. I would some up Umpad's intent with one of his quotes, "if they can parry your weapon you should just give them your knife." This was said as a joke to emphasis the importance of being able to remain out of range while attacking and evading your opponent even when physically in the Corto range. I think it goes without saying that Inosanto has one of the largest martial vocabularies on the planet (like one of those Language Savants who can fluently speak 20 different languages or a multi lingual, multimedia digital encyclopedia set). Those who put in the time with Guro Dan absorb a lot of knowledge and skills. The Inosanto academy is a great place to start and also have access to some of the best the martial arts world has to offer. Umpad would be one of those resources that Inosanto would bring in. IMHO, Inosanto creates encyclopedias that can fight and share a lot of information, Umpad creates blade fighters that can share flow and being. Lastly it's not the art it's the practitioner. Comparing arts and teaching methods can be like walking a mine field. I trust I didn't set any off. I went to the Sonny Umpad seminar that was advertised here last week and I must say I was very impressed. It was probably the best display of Filipino empty hands and knife work I have ever seen. If you have the opportunity to go to one of his seminars then I promise you that it will be well worth your time. For the person looking for an instructor in Scottsdale, Arizona: "There was a guy named Paul Morrero in Scottsdale. He taught Mande Muda (and maybe some other things as well). I met him at a seminar with Herman Suwanda. He seemed very knowledgeable and very practical. I don't know if he's still teaching. If you can find him, though, he'd be worth checking out." If you get the chance to train under Paul Marrero then you should take it. He doesn't teach much to the public anymore but you might be lucky. There is also a few other silat and escrima instructors there that are very good. Email me privately and I can see if I can give you the contact information. I'm a student from Hannover (Germany), and I will spent 3 month in Charlotte in fall 2000. Are there any FMA schools in this area you could recommend. I'm especially interested in Pekiti Tirsia, Inosanto's Blend, Silat, JKD and Thai Boxing. If anyone could recommend a school - please let me know.
