In many styles, espada y daga training I suppose could be looked upon as the "culmination" of the techniques of that style. This of course would depend heavily upon the style in question. Keep in mind that eskrima is a weapons-first art. Thus, the vast majority of styles that have any significant empty-hands content are merely translations of knife techniques. Therefore, when you are training single stick, you are really planting the seeds for espada y daga. Where you check with your hand, you would cut with the knife, where you strike with the stick, you would slash with the sword. That is not to say necessarily that espada y daga is the ultimate technical pursuit of the eskrimador. However, I would venture to say that in most styles, if a man was proficient in espada y daga techniques, he is likely a well-practiced and competent practitioner of his style. I hope my input is of value to some of you. Mabuhay Ang Eskrima! R. These points really got me to thinking how much of our arts(in general) are exactly like that. It's a study unto its self. Thanks Barry ------------------------------ From: DrunkenPanda@aol.com Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 11:46:36 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #176 <> While the waist plays a key role in internal styles, it is not the source of the power. The power in internal styles comes from a strong connection with the ground through what is commonly refered to as the "ground path" and through the storing of power within the postures. It is the coordination of these that allow internal stylists to generate great power with very little motion. If the chain of power from the ground to the hand is broken, the power will be greatly reduced. It is only the entire body working in unison that allows real power to be generated in internal styles. In my eskrima practice, I frequently apply the power generation I learned in Chen style Taijiquan. As I am accustomed to generating power in this way, I can get a lot of "oomph" with almost no effort. I find that Eskrima and Taijiquan go together very nicely, in terms of flow, sensitivity, and power generation. ------------------------------ From: ricklind@OREGON.UOREGON.EDU Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 13:06:44 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Matt Thornton >From: "Jerry Bikendova" >Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 01:00:27 GMT >Subject: eskrima: Matt Thornton > >What do people out there think of Matt Thornton.
