He shows the techniques in empty hand, but any experienced FMA practitioner should be able to translate the material into knife techniques with a little effort. A good intermediate step for beginners would be to try the same techniques with a palmstick in each hand. You can reach Rick at: Minnesota Kali Group 328 E. Hennepin Ave. Mpls. Strike 1 is a forehand. 2 is a backhand. 3 is a forehand uppercut. 4 is a backhand uppercut or low backhand. An 8 thrust is a backhand thrust and a 9 thrust is a forehand thrust. A florette' is like a doblette strike except that the first move deflects with the side of the blade and the second move cuts. Unless you see "RT" (right) or LT (left) when you read a series of numbers start with the right hand and then alternate hands. What Pekiti calls Upper 8, Guro Inosanto calls Heaven 6 or forehand (right # 1), backhand (left # 2) backhand (right # 2). I know each system has its own terminology, so if anyone needs a further translation of a term let me know. BASIC DOBLE' PATTERNS: (many patterns are first taught in a 6 count, but called an "8" because you will add this count latter) 1. Broken 6 (RT1 into RT#1 umbrella, LT4, RT1) 2. Upper 8 (1, 2, 2) 3. Lower 8 (RT1, RT4, LT4, RT2) 4. Reverse 8 (3, 4, 4) 5. Vertical cuts (fluid, vertical strikes based on upper 8) 6. 9-8 Thrusts (like upper 8 but with thrusts) 7. Florette' 8 8. Opening X (backhand scissor) 9. Closing X (forehand scissor) 10. Fluid Attacks (From RT side chamber) LT 2, RT 1 11. Witiks, Punyos and Reverse Grip in upper and lower 8 12. Double Cuts 1 to 12 (both sticks simultaneously follow the pattern of the Solo Baston Abcedario set 1). DRILLS: (all of which are vs. patterns 1 to 6 from above) 1. Mirror image (you do the same pattern as your partner-training wheel phase). 2. Reverse drills (2 vs. 1, 1 vs. 2 etc) Footwork helps you cut from behind. 3. Solo vs. Doble' (you'll break the pattern by going into solo baston during a Doble' drill. 4. Opening X 5. Florette' 6. Closing X 7. Thrusts and scoops 8. Reverse grip 9. Break in, Break out 10. Fluid Attack 11. Witiks and punyos (with witiks you are doubling the timing by inserting a witik between strikes and with punyos you are intercepting his strikes 12. Double cuts (you are using both sticks together in the same strike to counter hit). In addition to the above 12 Attacks, there are 12 Disarms, 12 Contradas (asymmetrical combinations based on speed) and 12 Recontras (power entries and takedowns) in Pekiti-Tirsia double stick work. We worked on all four phases of Pekiti double stick at the 1998 Pekiti summer camp in Ashokan NY. It was a lot of fun to immerse ourselves in a single weapon category from beginning to end. I think all who attended would agree that concentrating on double stick really during the camp later helped their empty hand, espada y daga and double knife skills.
