She teaches kids karate, I teach adults silat. Every two months we have a "fun" night after the kids test. What has become the standard is "Swords." We take foam swords, padded sticks and shields and have at it. What was funny is I am training a Green Beenie. Who discovered to his dismay that a despite millions of dollars of training via the US government he continually fell victim to a kamakazi nine year old with a foam sword. I nearly hurt myself with his expression when a little wide-eyed eight year old girl with round glasses just walked up and stabbed him in the back. He did fairly well against older more trained opponents, yet everytime he died within seconds against the kids (he finally learned to wait until the gerbils had killed each other off). I told him that the world's greatest swordsman had nothing to fear from the world's second greatest swordsman, but the rank amatuer who would do something unpredictable. He learned the truth of that statement that night. And unfortunately, it is the trained people who are most susceptible to falling into patterns and going on autopilot during a fight. Which is why he began to understand why I am constantly harping on "Think while you fight" ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 11:05:48 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #187 Did anyone else notice that there were two eskrima digest #186, both with different content? ===== "Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor" Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? About 50% of the material stays the same, about 50% varies. Last quarter the emphasis was on the weapons; all of the JKD tools and concepts was aproached through the FMA weapons approach. In the past when teaching weapons I have used a single stick first; this last time we started with stick and knife, mostly because of the issue of developing both hands from the beginning. The difference this last time was huge. Beginning students picked up the trapping hand idea from the beginning. I didn't have to do as much walking around and repositioning everyone's live hand since the idea of the cut folowing the strike fixed the need to use the hand, and the blade size forced them to retract the blade back before the next strike. I've done the long and short from the start with individuals and small groups, this was the first time for a large (25) group. Whenever In my own training I've been working some variation of the long and short extensively for the last couple of years. I had a pretty profound neurologic injury which resulted in the loss of arm use, and my self imposed rehab has emphasized ambidexterity as much as possible. Also, I found very meaningful the fact that John LaCoste started Guro Dan with long and short (if I have my facts right), which Dan changed, only to go back in recent years to the early introduction of the long and short. One last observation. As others have commented, I think the only way to learn to use the double tools in fighting is to train them exactly that way. The drills help with dexterity but when you spar them you find out what works for you and what doesn't. Then you have to go back to training methods to develop the skills needed to try to get back to real time. Stuff that may be pretty doesn't always translate into fighting, and often effective fighting stuff is really "ugly" (beauty is in the eyes of the beholder). Both are important, though. I personally really like some of the striking patterns from Lameco, and the stuff I've garnered from the Dog Bros has helped focus the mind (Thank You, Marc). I still get hit a lot but it's not as bad as it was. Maybe I'm losing brain cells.
