Someone told me that they should be the length of the distance from your armpit to the end of your fingertips; I've also heard that 30" is the correct length. Right now I'm using 28.5" rattan sticks which I seem to keep shattering and am thinking about getting some hard synthetic sticks from Jeff "stickman" Finder, but the only sizes his "Panther II's" come in that are close to 30" are 28" and 31" - any thoughts. Just in case it matters, I'm about 6' tall and the distance from my armpit to the end of my fingertips is exactly 31" - BTW, anyone have any experience with Stickman's Panther II's?" I don't have any experience with Jeff's sticks, so I'll let someone else answer that part of Stewart's question. As to the length of the rattan training stick in Pekiti-Tirsia, Stewart's source is correct, we do start with a stick that is measured from the student's armpit to the tip of his middle finger. I am 6'1" and this gives me a preferred training stick length of 32". This gives you a good compromise length between a long sword (which may have a blade length that is equal to the total length of the training stick) and a short sword which, in Pekiti, has a blade as long as the distance from your elbow to your fingertips. If you think about it, it would be difficult to use a "one size fits all" stick length. What would feel well balanced and give good reach to a 6' 2" fighter would feel cumbersome to a 5' 2" fighter. Keep in mind however that this fixed stick length is just an aid to give beginners a feel for weapon movement. In later sparring I often employ a "grab bag" box, from which you spar with whatever length weapon you get. But it helps to have a base in a weapon length that works best for you before you take an unfamiliar weapon and try make it work the way you want. It's like the saying "you should understand the rules before you break the rules." After reading what you, and others, have had to say, i've decided to go ahead and buy a pair for day to day to training. I'll still use rattan as needed but will try some better treated ones such as those that Jeff makes, those at bloodsport.com(I've heard were well made), and I will look into east-west martial arts per Ken's recommendation. I understand that the length of the stick that one uses is based, in part on ones preference, however -Ken- I thought that Tuhon McGrath recommended a 30" stick for PT rather than advocating the armpit to finger tip measurement?! I like the length of a 29" or 30" stick - anything much shorter or longer feels a bit awkward. Perhaps Tuhon McGrath can respond if he sees this. In any event, thanks for the responses.
