Certainly the larga mano styles out there would prompt you to use a longer stick. Quicker, closer-range styles would lead you to use a shorter stick. Myself, I use a 22 1/2" kamagong stick in my practicing of Serrada. I am 5' 8" with average length arms. I started my training with the first stick I could get my hands on, which was a heavy 28" rattan stick. To be honest, it was a bit awkward and cumbersome making my quick Serrada movements with such a long, heavy stick. My progress suffered as a result. Once I got my hands on a light 22 1/2" rattan stick, my crispness improved immensely. Now I train with a kamagong stick in my basic movements for strength. I go back to a light rattan stick when I need to move a bit faster (for reflex drills, or simply to feel flow in faster movement) There is no such thing as a "one length fits all" solution. The right stick for the right job is the idea. Here's some food for thought; The late Grandmaster Angel Cabales used to love saying "It doesn't matter if you have a mile-long stick, I block it with 18 inches." Hope my 2 cents is worth at least that much to all of you. Mabuhay Ang Eskrima! R. Saturno, Jr ------------------------------ From: Rocky Pasiwk Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 23:52:51 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Cuentada DeMano Seminar Warning long post written by the Grammerly challenged!!! I just got back from the Southwest U.S for the first time I decided to drive from Michigan to Flagstaff and Phoenix AZ. and turn the seminar into a business/pleasure trip. In the 80's when I was doing a lot of seminars I always flew, I actually have seen more of Europe than I have my own Country, I have actually been to Denver 4 times and never been out of the airport, it is a nice airport though. Any ways the seminar went well even with my bad knee, the people in AZ are great and what a place for a school, I believe the school its self is in a mountain range called the Superstition Mts. The area is awsome, finally got to see the Grand Canyon, I fle over it probablly 40 to 50 times, but never got to see it. The Grand Canyon is well, its Grand. I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman by the name of Fred Evangelista ( sp ) he is suppose to be Danny Inosantos cousin. He does Okinawin Kenpo, and has a reputation as one bad ass fighter. Which I believe, knowing some of the guys he plays with. We hit it off pretty good and my 2 year old daughter loved him. He is truly a first class guy. As are the rest of the guys Dave, Tony, and Don Richardson ect... You west coasters should take up on the closeness and hospitality of Mr. Richardson. Especially you military types, If your impressed with some guy who taught a few Navy Seal guys hear and there, then you would love Mr. Rich, as his students call him. He is a Judo Master, and does TKD, but his TKD is not the average TKD. Mr. Rich is 1 of only 9 of the original 147 SOG's he actually helped put together the training that latter became the Seals. His real life experience's make for one hell of a competent hand to hand fighter. He host's a summer camp every year in June that is pretty unique, he has about 5 or 6 different Masters or the equivalence of teaching in different rooms at the camp, and as a student you are welcome to pick any class you want, like a Buffet. I myself may be teaching at this years camp ( hey that's worth the tuition itself :-) ) As will Mr. Rich and Fred E. and my student Hal and many others. The camp is well worth it considering everything you get. And if you can spare the time drive it, the scenery is awesome. My wife fell in love with the area so much that I have been instructed to look for property for our restaurant in Flagstaff. Any ways that's about it for now. Rocky P.S Hey Crafty thanks for the plug on your page. WOW little old me a subject of one of the Craft Masters rants. Also of interest is that even as short as Angel was he used a ~28" stick (perhaps as short as 26") in the early days of Stockton Serrada. His stick slowly shortened to 24" then 22" then 20" then...
