Smith the author, using the pseudonym John Gilbey, wrote the book with a great deal of tongue in cheek. His latest book,"Martial Musings, A Portrayal of Martial Arts in the Twentieth Century", goes into the subject of his three books by John Gilbey. Martial Musings is well worth the price,$39.95 in the USA and $59.95 in Canada, Published by Via Media. Smith has met, trained with and/or co-authored martial arts books with some of the outstanding martial arts masters of the twentieth century. The anecdotes alone are priceless. Via Media also publishes, "The Journal of Asian Martial Arts", an outstanding scholarly treatment of the Martial arts in their historical, cultural, social and geographical context. I've been a subcriber from the first issue and have never been disappointed. There are gems there along with the tongue in cheek, unusual techniques (surprise! sudden noxious odors!! --- sandbagging, ie. the guys who crys so you feel sorry for him, then suddenly you're cold-cocked) and the idea of specializing in one or more of them.I think Gilbey deserves a careful, if somewhat skeptical, reading. ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2000 14:01:46 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Sticks type, ranges, popcorn, etc., etc. Size of sticks...remember that a 24" stick to a 4'10" man does not equally translate to a 24" stick to a 6'1" man. Doesn't mean that a 6'1" man can't use a 26" stick, just that it's not an equal equation(??) You need to be comfortable with the weapon you choose and you need to be comfortable with all weapons be it a chair, 2x4, car jack,(staff training) or a broken antenna, pvc pipe, fanny bag, box of cigarettes, etc., etc. Small sticks for close range, medium sticks for medium range, and long sticks for longer range. Simple...not quite...A long weapon can be used in short range, a short weapon can be used in long range. Picture this...two men fighting with 30 inch sticks can comfortably stand at approximately 6 feet apart. At this distance either can reach out (30 inches on stick, about 28 inches on arm=58" plus about a foot while leaning in equals 6 feet. This is an example of long range fighting with long weapons. Now what happens when you start fighting the weapon hand/arm(defang the snake). I often teach that this becomes a close range use of the long range weapon. Your movements become smaller because your "target" is closer. If you are fighting him at 6 feet it is long range. But if he leans in as described, his hand becomes about 3 feet away from you, the "range(between you and his hand) suddenly becomes closer. You can also stay on the outside and fight largo mano with a short stick. Also, what begins close range in empty hand for me(elbow can reach face) is medio for my instructor because he is so short. What is long range to him is middle to me, and what is close for him is super close for me. These are all the types of things that come into question when deciding what you want. Re the post about diameter and weight, I like Tuhon's idea about the grab bag sparring. I myself prefer fat heavy rattan(weapons) because I look at it as toning my muscles. My view is that if you train with super heavy sticks, the regular and lighter sticks are easier to move. When I first began training, I asked my instructor how the hell his forearms got so big. Stuart and Kalani can vouge for me here, he looks like he is hiding Mighty Mouse at the top of his upper forearm. He told me it was from 40 years of spinning the sticks. Hmmm. lets put this analytical mind to work. If I use a stick that weighs 4 times his stick, it should only take me about 10 years, grrreat!!! So that is why I started working out with heavy bars and heavy sticks. I saw a big gain in strength and definition in my forearms (even once picked a girl up in a bar flexing it for her;)) Anyway, you also have to train with lighter weapons because there are differences in the way you fight with weapons. I don't know what sticks were shattering, but if it was rattan, the younger rattan with skin is my personal favorite. There is a popular type of rattan out there now that is dark brown, skinny, light, and has alot of nodes, but this is an older more mature rattan that is more fit for demonstrations as it cracks easy. If this is the type you have, they will probably all break. I will say though that Kombat Instruments at www.bloodsport.com (Oh, Nick, yet another FREE plug;) has some excellent sticks. Most of us here in Hawaii at www.fullcontacthi.com use his sticks when we fight. Anyways, on to higher ground. Popcorn?
