I own several, each is not only a great training blade, but an excellent piece of workmanship. Check'em out. Crafty ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 00:52:26 -0700 Subject: eskrima: an interpretation A Howl etc: I just got back from a training trip and would like to add a quick yip to the stick size thread. It's not just the size (and weight) etc of the stick, it is the ability of the man to handle it. Anything taken too far is , , , well, too far. Try fighting with a 10 foot stick. The issue is "What can you handle?" Someone might fight with the same size stick as Arlan (hell, or bigger) but find he handles his with a little more zip. For me, and as Arlan noted, and I suspect for many of us, the preferred size will vary according to circumstances. I think most of us will agree you want to be able to handle a wide variety of sizes. But in the context of a stickfight I would interpret what Arlan is saying to mean "If the size/weight I handle is bigger than the size/ weight stick of my opponent, chances are he's dogmeat." ;-) Getting to corto on the Salty one with any size stick-- watch out for that left hand. The only times I've ever done it is when he's grabbed me by the head and thrown me to the ground. ;-) Woof, Crafty Dog PS: The Gathering is this Saturday-- "Higher Consciousness through Harder Contact" (c) ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 10:50:12 -0700 Subject: eskrima: fallow fellow A Howl etc: Doc Fung wrote: > > The Gathering approaches and I won't be fighting. Crafty doing too much ConradFu...no time anymore. > > regards, > > carl It would be easy enough to credit fatherhood, but the past 7 months have been very frustrating on the injury front-- principally the sacrum problems but also a popped lateral collateral in the right knee (seems to have healed fine) and the broken finger (2 months of minimal use of the right hand) blah blah. Getting old ain't for sissies! I'm happy to say that there has been a lot of improvement (lots of work and lots of learning), but I am not in the kind of shape at the moment I would want to be in to step on the field at at Gathering. I don't know if this is retirement or a sabbatical. The great psychologist Dr. Carl Jung spoke of the need to "lie fallow" at certain points in one's life and perhaps this is such a moment for me. Eric and Arlan both seem to have come back fine from their respective sabbaticals and perhaps it will be so for me. But for the moment I'm greatly enjoying teaching and learning (more on this shortly) and training and the DBMA series (#2 is being edited BTW. Its all fights and will be titled "A Gathering of the Pack") and the deep joys of fatherhood. Cindy and I are hoping for more!
