Todd ------------------------------ From: EGJundis@aol.com Date: Fri, 5 May 2000 19:33:42 EDT Subject: eskrima: Flow Drills & Intent Variations I have seen include: Footwork drills for spatial relationships Footwork drills for take downs & kicks (commonly seen in Silat) Joint lock flows Disarm flows Empty Hand Flows (Punching and hitting) Counter for counter flows (can include single & double stick, Espada y Daga, etc.) Serrada or Sumbrada Variations Villabrille-Largusa Variations Pikiti-Tersia & Hubad Lubad Variations Also I find it interesting to see how different instructors use the same flow exercises to train different intents and attributes. For example the Serrada counter for counter flow as a standard practice is inclusive of the following areas: non-preset order of techniques used, inclusive all the Serrada techniques, practiced at the corto through largo range. What I've found interesting to see is how some practitioners liken it to fighting, others use it as tool for relaxing and sensitivity, others focus on realy hard impulse hits, some use a blade focus and drop out blocks in favor of passing techniques, some focus on set patterns found within the flow and teach it as such. I would be interested to hear what other Serrada and/or Sumbrada practitioners would have to add. Two non-FMA flows that I think are also useful to learn (even outside of internal distinctions) are some of the various Taiji push hand exercises and Roshou used in Bagau Chang and Hsing-I. One of my standards for what I consider high level practitioners is the ability to flow with any one in any setting. Some interesting flows that I have watched are Angola Capoeira with a Olympic level judoka, Angola Capoeira and Silat, Serrada hands and Wing Chun, Balintawak Empty hand and Chinese Internal Martial Arts, Silat and Chinese Internal Martial Arts, etc. Not to mention my attempts to flow with practitioners in various other systems. Sometimes the Serrada foundation allowed me to walk circles around folks, other times I found myself woefully out of my comfort zone. It's been a great nonlinear way to pick up and experience other systems and personalitie s. You're very correct about Professor. It wasn't claimed that Kimball was a professor but a Ph.D. I think the other instructor, don't recall them, used the title of professor. What is Kimball's Ph.D. in?
