I've found that flow drills (counter, feed, counter, feed) can be really helpful for ranging, especially if one of the focuses of the drill is breaking in and out of largo, serrada, and corto/trapping. In my case, my instructor (Greg Goldmahker from Defensor Kali/Eskrima) started with Sumbrada. When I had gotten confident and smooth with Sumbrada, we started adding variations form the pattern one at a time. After enough practice, we no longer bothered with the Sumbrada. Now we change ranges and throw multiple attacks as opposed to just countering then feeding. It has taught me a lot about changing range as part of a strike or a counter, which is really important to me (my base fighting style is high school wrestling and I really like the trapping range too). Adding the variations in number of strikes, including abinicos and other such sneaky jab-type strikes has helped my ability to read a commited strike and not be sucked by the fakes. The drills themselves were not really useful after a certain point, but changing the emphasis of the drill, the range, the length of stick, or whatever has been great... Certainly worth pursuing. D.'s and such I too would like to know what Kimball's Ph.D. is in. If I am correct and my memory serves me well, I think it might have something to do with martial arts. If this is correct, where did it come from? Also, what school would be able to give such a prestigious degree? One more question. No offense intended, but what does Maha Guro Panglima mean? If Kimball doesn't slow down with the titles, he will have to turn off word wrapping. He has never studied the martial arts before, and doesn't want to get involved in a school that ends up being a waste of time. Since I know nothing of this area of the country and I live 1000 miles from him, I was hoping someone on the list could help me help him out. He isn't too hung up on style, he just wants an effective system but more importantly a good instructor to teach him." Pekiti-Tirsia Mataas na Guro Erwin Ballarta has a group in San Antonio. I don't know enough about Australian cities to tell you what part of the country they are in, but if you are not close to them they should at least be able to point you in the right direction. The head instructors at the school are students of Guro Inosanto's.
