You don't want them too long. And even then you will end up breaking them regularly if you do any kind of manual labor. (I lost my nails completely when putting a new roof on the house). Remember the claw is only the tip of the spear, the thumb is the rest of the weapon. ------------------------------ From: DrunkenPanda@aol.com Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 11:04:39 EDT Subject: eskrima: re: Weapons in Europe <> It should also be noted that the delightful legal system we share with england wherein you are innocent until proven guilty does not (last time I heard) extend into the rest of europe. If I recall correctly, you must prove your innocence in a crime, not the other way around. When I first saw Eskrima (a little over two years ago), I thought "I gotta get me some of that!" I thought it was a beautiful and highly functional art. The footwork looked as graceful as a dance (I have been told many patterns were disguised as dances to keep them secret from enemies) and the stickwork looked like it could do major damage. The more I learn, the better I like it. It was apparntly quite effective at drawing blood when slashed at any deserving faces;) Mabuhay Jon ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "Brian T. It took another 10 years or so before I really began to explore and learn to love the art. I guess this is a strange question but I thought of it the other day and would like to read what others thought when they first seen Escrima/Arnis/Kali. ME: My story is very similar to yours brother. I lived in the Philippines for over 4 years and worked as a criminal investigator in the USAF. I had 13 Filipino nationals working under me on a surveillance unit, (they were DOD policemen and special investigators. Three of these great people were life long practitioners of Escrima/Arnis. One of them was the master of his family art. They knew that I was very much into police tactics and martial arts and offered to teach me their respective art. I respectfully declined and said that I would stick with the Karate instruction I was receiving from a "Certified" black belt instructor on base. What an idiot I was, (young and stupid). Having never heard of "playing" sticks or blades, and thinking it had no real application back in the real world I did not feel the least wanting for turning down their offer. Well they gave me a strange look, almost one of pity and never brought up the issue again. Now here I am almost 20 years latter and regretting my ignorance. Thank God I was given another opportunity 10 years latter to receive the same in-depth instruction by another masterful instructor. But I cant help but wonder where my abilities would be right now, if only I would have.....well, should have, would have and could have, really have no place in our training! In germany you can carry a folding knife or a spring knife, if its blade is not longer than 9 cm. Sorry about my bad english, have a nice trip to europe!
