I had just had a wild incident in southern Mexico lead to three days in prison and was mentally trolling for martial arts. There were various classes being taught at the gym of the University I attended. There was a TKD group, a Shotokan Karate taught by a former Mr. Maine or something like that, Fu Jow Pai taught by PKA champion Paul Vizzio and some guys with sticks. "Ha!" I cleverly said, "What do they do when they don't have their sticks?" I went with FJP and Vizzio. It wasn't till about 5 years later that I knew enough to realilze that the guy with sticks was Tom Bisio and to know who he was. I was currently enrolled in a Karate/TKD school. I was about a Purple belt in the Karate system and the only weapons we dealt with was the Bo staff, and I remember I did not like working the Bo.. and I still dont really care too much for it.. But when Sensei brought in his instructor to teach us something new, (FMA) I got a glance at some real neat stuff.. Things that would later on bring on a few scars, but I enjoyed getting those scars. Me and a friend of mine picked up on this art really fast and we played around daily weather it at school, after school, and after class. I played with and learnt Kali, eskrima, arnis till I got my black belt and graduated high school and went on to the military. Upon return from the military, I grew away from the martial arts for a period of time. It wasnt until recently I have gotten back into the martial arts. I got involved back in TKD wich I found out once again I just dont have the nack for anymore. I posted here to find out if anyone new of any FMArtist in my area and a few gentlemen spoke out, one imparticular wich I just had the honor of meeting and playing with this past weekend. But I contacted one of the gentlemen and now im in progress of learning Serrada eskrima. I find it a little different than the Kali I grew up learning but I still enjoy it. To me when I pick up a stick I feel this tremendous force of wanting to learn and just play around till somthing comes of it. I have had a love for this art for so long I cant imagine every really being involved in any other martial art. Being that the techniques are more street applicable, and based on realistic scenerios. I still have a ways to go before I consider myself good. But If I would of never found or heard anything of the FMA I probably would have no interest what so ever in Martial arts at all... stickfighter27 ------------------------------ From: John Chow Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 18:38:33 +1000 Subject: eskrima: re Need info help please - Kali Ilustrisimo Luis Pellicer wrote:- (1) ...(sniped)......Recollections of participation in a large American group of escrimadors visiting the Philippines are there, specifics are not. Tatang had signed certificates attesting to their training (like when you attend Dan Inosanto's workshops). I was told that this group was so well organised and prepared that they came will ready-printed certificates - printed in advance from America. Tatang was in a good mood and complied with every request. I am not sure whether this group included Maha Guro Sultan Uddin. Anybody can verify for the public record? It would be good for the archivist of the Ilustrisimo clan (Norman, Pedro Reyes?) re (2): Tony Diego and Romy Macapagal used to see Tatang almost daily for a few years. Norman actually lives in the same house as Tatang so he would know what Tatang does and who he was seeing. I am sure they would like to add any 'missing bits' into their memoriabilia and archives. Luis, Please facilitate the transfer of information relating to this issue from ALL sources to the official archivist of the Ilustrisimo clan. I grow my right hand nails a little longer than most--I use them for playing guitar and banjo. I used to eat lots of eggs so that my nails wouldn't break while playing. I had very tough nails. I stopped that a few years ago, though, because my cholesterol was through the roof! My nails are still pretty strong--they always were--but there is a marked difference. There are some gelatin products on the market that are also supposed to strengthen nails. I've been told that they don't work, because the proteins aren't the same as the ones in the nails. I was told this by a couple of classical guitarists, who are the same folks who recommended the eggs. Still, if you have to watch your diet because of cholesterol, clear nail polish may be the way to go. Pragmatism only goes so far.
