Woo hoo Chad - way to go hombre. Thanks for the vote of confidence for the Rogues Gallery, I can just feel my inbox start to warm up already I started the gallery initially so that I could learn HTML and web page design, but I sincerly hope that it will grow to be a useful resource to digest members - hey I now know what Pat Davies, Tuhon Bill, Meghan Gardner, Brian Henderson, Alain Burrese, "Animal" MacYoung and of course the infamous Ray Terry look like 8-) But for this to happen I do need your support... www.techdojo.co.uk/rogues - you know it makes sense! Something to do with my uncles and dad. My uncle Jimmy (Tacosa)and Uncle Remi used to "play" with me allot. I would also get to swing sticks at my uncle Perry and other eskrimadors of that time. My father never really encouraged or discouraged me to train nor did he ever really teach me directly until I reached instructor level. As I grew older I became more interested. Having it around all my life and being around the Stockton crowd at such an early stage in my life made the prospect of training less attractive. What I mean to say is that it was 'normal' instead of exotic. As I matured it became a passion and a way of life. After I'd been in business for about a year & 1/2, I was looking around for some sort of exercise to relieve stress (and lots of it!), preferably something useful since I was never one for climbing stairs that go nowhere :). Also, since I was working long hours alone, and in a retail environment which doesn't involve much physical activity, I figured a martial art would do. A friend of mine had recently joined a school which did JFGF/JKD and a thing called Eskrima, and since it was in walking distance I figured I'd go look. All the other schools (mainly TKD & Karate with a little judo) were either too far (no car) or too expensive. I was really interested in TKD, since a friend in it told me there was a lot of kicking. (joy!) But as soon as I walked in to the JFGF/FMA school i was in looooove!!! Kicking and punching and elbows, oh my! and then...i saw...the STICKS! immediately after my trial class, i turned to Sifu and said here's my money sign me up how many times a week can I come to class please? Of course, once i got over the dazzle of "wow that looks cool" and sweated, bruised, and sored my way into a basic understanding of what I was actually learning, I fell in love even more, especially with the Kali and Silat....mmmmm, elbows..nerve destructions..."defanging the snake"...triangle footwork...principles & techniques! Self defense for small people! Over-muscling not necessary! plus if some weiner ever grabs me in a bar, now he's gonna wish he didn't >:) jocelyne/Hardcore Girl ------------------------------ From: "Johnaleen" Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 13:59:50 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: First Impressions Hello to all I mostly sit here and watch, I have been on the digest for over a year now and once in a wile you will see me make a comment. I was a child in the late 60s and 70's and grew up watching Bruce. also I was living in The barrio and one of the few White young Females there. As children we were forced to become part of the Los Angeles gangs or be around people that would protect us. As I was poor as dirt it was Los Angeles Gangs that I was forced into for protection. As it was the mid 70's all the gangs at that time were manly using knives, nunchaku, and sticks. Yes there were guns and all that as well but......... that's were Bruce's influence came in and the first time I saw some of his moves and the kali. I was lucky to be out of the gangs by the time I was 12 because I moved out of the area. My First impressions of what I thought at the time was just to stay alive I don't think there was much more then that in my mind then. I guess the first real Impression of Kali and Filipino Martial arts came 10 or so years latter when I was around 20 or so years old. By then I had been living in central Calif and had just been married less then a year. My Husbands father was WWll Vet and Filipino. During the war he fought like all or most did. About a year into the marriage I had a miscarriage and it was partially my husbands fault. But my Father in law Victor he was so upset. Family meant so much to him. I had never seen anyone use a stick the way he did at the time. He went after my Husband with it and had him down and out in a few minutest flat. My Husband was 6 foot 3 and 200 lbs my father in law was 72 years old 5 foot and all of 150 lbs. That's when I was really introduced to the art. After that day Victor and I would spend hours on the beach walking and talking about the war and about the art that he learned as a child growing up in the Philippines. I spent countless hours on the beach being enthralled by his tales of how he used what he learned to survive the war. He was a forward Scout During the war when he was fighting in the Philippines. One of his jobs as scout was to find and capture single prisoners for questioning when he had the chance on a re-con. It is amazing how blood thirsty you can get when your trying to survive. His stories and the little he showed me then stayed with me for another 12 years before I was able to do FMA, But I believe its what he told me and the little that he gave to me that un-doudtedly brought me to FMA a Few years back. I only had this wonderful man in my life for a few years he died in 1985 at 74 years old. I have his Toys he brought back and I have his stories written down and still in my head. someday I will put them all down in a book. He was an amazing man to be sure. And that early Contact with FMA years ago with him saved my life countless times and is still saving it and helping me heal. Thanks Dad I miss you J. ------------------------------ From: p.taylor@talk21.com Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 20:03:53 BST Subject: eskrima: uk knife law Hi, Quick note about UK knife laws, it is not illegal in the UK to carry a knife, in law you may carry a folding non-locking blade under 3 inches in length, as defined in section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, the following two acts also apply: Section One Prevention of Crime Act 1953 Offensive Weapons Act 1996 If stopped and questioned by the police about why you are carrying such a blade you have to demonstrate reasonable cause, the court decides what reasonable, if it goes that far.
