Great to read all those stories of the first impressions of FMA by the various members of this list. Let me tell me story. My core background is in Chung Do Kwan TKD and Vee Jiu Jitsu under an instructor at Notre Dame. In the fall of 1989, during my last year of law school, I had the opportunity to visit with my instructor in NY City. While there, I had the chance to meet with and have a private lesson with Prof Vee. The entire two hour workout centered solely on Arnis (to make a long story short, I come from a branch of Vee JJ that did not teach arnis.....toward the end of his life, he developed a branch of Vee JJ called Vee Arnis Jitsu) I was hooked. He recommended to me that I study Arnis if I ever got the chance. In addition, I had attended some Rick Clark camps and seminars and was intrigued by some of the arnis material he taught. After graduating from law school and moving to Columbus, I tried to find an Arnis/FMA school in the area. There weren't any. FMA and Indonesian ain't exactly prevalent out here in Central Ohio. That situation changed a couple of years when a member of this list, Dan McConnell, posted a Remy Presas seminar announcement. Turns out that Dan lives in the same subdivision that I do (literally a 30 second drive from my house) and that he taught Modern Arnis. It fits my soul as a lot of the concepts are very similar to what I've learned from Vee JJ. Of course, attending the first Remy Presas seminar was an eye opener. My reaction was that "Holy S---" :-) I fell in love with it. Remy Presas is really an amazing martial artist. Since then, Dan and I have attended quite a few Arnis seminars together and hopefully attend lots more seminars in the future. Dan is truly an excellent instructor and has been a tremendous help for me martial arts wise. The great thing is that the FMA, through Modern Arnis, has really recast a lot of my past martial arts experience (now going on 17 years) in a new light. In a lot of ways, Modern Arnis has recharged my passion for the martial arts big time. Also, in the past couple years, Dan and I got hooked on Pencak Silat Mande Muda, particularly with regard to the Harimau techniques and attended seminars by Herman Suwanda in Dayton, Ohio. Like many people, we were just crushed by the news of Herman's untimely death. Not only he was an excellent martial artist, he was even better as a person. But I would like to thank you for the post you put on the Eskrima Digest. You made an excellent point that I never could have made about humility in the martial arts. And you are right about there being more self-proclaimed grandmasters, etc. in the US than anywhere else. Peace, respect and an open mind. BTW, Jon, thank you for creating this gallery, it will be nice to put some faces to various rants ;-) And as always, thank you Ray for providing this digest. My first exposure to the filipino martial arts came when I was really young. I was in the backyard one day, (I was about 6 or 7) and had just seen a kung fu flick on Black Belt theater the previous night. (Black Belt theater was a Friday night martial arts movie aired by the local ABC affiliate, KITV. Every Fri. night they had a different kung fu movie. It was really cool. Anyway...) and I was whacking at the bushes with my 'sword', a stick. My grandpa saw me doing this (he was doing yard work) and he came over and told me I was doing it wrong. He then took the stick and did some amazing things with it. He taught me the very basics of eskrima, and laid the foundation for what would later become my passion. However, I didn't know it for what it was. Only YEARS later (13?) after I met Datu, did I realize what my grandpa had shown me. Datu had always asked me if I had ever studied under another eskrima teacher, and I always told him no (I had studied various other MA's since about 10 y.o.). I guess I actually had. Unfortunately, I never had the chance again to study under my grandpa. I had asked him once when I was about 20, and he claimed he was too old and that violent things are better left alone. I later found out he had cancer and he died in 1997, during my first year away at college in New Mexico. I love him dearly and miss him a lot. Peace, respect and an open mind. Didn't have a clue who he was but had appeared in a film with Bruce Lee I had been informed by my friend who I took as being more knowledgeable than me in these matters! So off to Glasgow we went and the first thing I saw was this guy doing monstrous kicks as we went in - Rick Young! Then this little guy appeared with the sulky CM (why did he never smile?) and the seminar took off! Never held a stick before and we had to pay a fortune for these shorten versions. The Jun Fan stuff appealed to me more as it was something I could get my head around but the subsequent trips to Rick Young over the last 14 odd years has meant I know which end to now hold! Changed my life that day. Swords in University Halls: While its not illegal for you to have display weapons displayed - if that's what they are for -recent incidents in the UK have led to public fear about swords in general. I think the better way to look at it is that while in temporary residence, do you really want a potential enemy to be able to access a weapon so easily and turn it to their advantage? Gladiator: One of the guys starring in the film lives in Aberdeen(bodybuilder type with long black hair). He used to work the door and not the best liked doorman in the area. Huge bodybuilder who did the highland games circuits trying to throw tree trunks further than others or hurling a lump of granite over a stick while wearing a skirt ; ). Didn't rate anyone unless they were his size. Years ago I was guesting a class ran by a friend in Aberdeen one time and this gladiator was there with attitude. I taught the class in Muay Thai and then did a display of stuff including the stick and he was impressed enough to change his attitude to me. I got the occasional grunt of recognition! He approached me recently a different man. Eloquent in conversation and complete with attractive girlfriend. He informed me of his role in the film and his learning of sword play and told me he'd like to look at the FMA! Change in attitude or what! I was impressed and hope to take in the film soon! Needless to say this was 6 months and he's never come to the class but things work slowly but its good to see them working! About 10 years ago I suffered a serious knee injury that meant that my chosen style of Lau Gar kung fu was not an option for a good while (too many kicks). So I figured that I would check out some kali, so that I could keep training until my knee was better and then go back. What I got into was Arnis and I liked it so much that I never really went back to kung fu. I still train with enthusiasm on a daily basis, and my knee has been alright for years.
