At the same time both Al and myself were looking for someone in the FMAs. We had read the excellent four part article in Inside Kung Fu about the FMAs and were seeking out instruction but to no avail. There was not much offered in the way of martial arts in Ft. Wayne at the time. I look around today and tell the newcomers how fortunate they are at the wide diversity of arts available today. In early 1977 Al met Garry Bowldes who was a student of Mike Inay. At around the same time me and Al purchased the 8mm films of Angel Cabales and Jimmy Tacosa. My initial impression was that no one could move a stick that fast. No friggin way. But I was young and dumb, what did I know? Al later introduced me to Garry and my journey in the FMAs began. In October of 1977 Garry, myself, and Al's brother Phil moved to California to study with Mike Inay. It was through Mike that I received the bulk of my knowledge. It was also through Mike that I was able to meet and train with other people, particuarly a number of the grandfathers. One of the best things going on during those days was the formation of the Westcoast Eskrima Society (WES). Every three months they would have a meeting. These meetings would take place in places such as Stockton, San Jose, and Los Angeles. It was another opportunity to meet and work out with the various practitioners of the FMAs. One of my most fond memories is of the meetings that took place in Stockton. After the meetings some of us would go over to Dan Inosanto's parents house. There we would be fed and treated like family. After supper another Master would motion to me and Frank DeFanti and we would go over to his house where he would graciously show me and Frank parts of his Largo Mano. Boy I miss those days. One thing I would also like to mention is my humble thanks to Dan and his parents. I don't know if Dan's parents ever realized how much me and Frank appreciated their hospitality. They took us into their home, fed us and treated us like family. It's an act of humanity that I will never forget. Unfortunately I never got the opportunity to properly thank Mr. and Mrs. Inosanto for this hospitality. That was my introduction into the FMAs. A journey that continues to this day. We even got so brazen as to convince a local TKD school to start a Kendo class just for us on Saturday mornings. It was the only time we could attend any martial arts classes. Night after night we would meet after school in the parking lot and work out with the various strikes and counters. Let me preface this and state for the record that this was really my first time attending a martial arts school. I had visited several when I was younger, but none really ever made sense to me or captured my heart. Kendo was fun and it was my group of friends that I worked out with, but I knew in my heart it was just a sport. Sometimes I would get reprimanded for striking someone in a non-point area. When you are dead, you are dead in my book. I still love to sword fight!! (don't get me wrong) One of my companions, Mike Barnes, had taken other forms of martial arts and brought some siniwali sticks to the parking lot one night. He preceded to teach me and another friend how to do a basic 6 and four count. Now, being the uncoordinated person that I am, I had to learn to use both my hands at the same time. Ugh!! But I kept working on it for several days and finally got the hang of it. On one of the nights that we were working out this tough looking fellow came up to us and asked us if we knew what we were doing with those sticks. He stopped by several times more through the next couple of weeks and eventually asked if we would like to come and visit his school and meet his instructor. We did! And how glad I am now that we did. Fast-forward 2-3 days. We arrive at the Inayan School of Eskrima in TN and meet with Lahong Guro Steve Klement. He talks to us and explains some of the things that the class is doing. Then he returns to the class to work out. We watched siniwalis, serrada, lock and block, flow sparring and some nice kadena work. All this time I'm asking my friend if they are really expecting us to use real sticks when we first start. Haahaa!! Looking back is always funny! He of course does not know. He, James Earles and I are all blown away by the work out. I couldn't even understand how something could be so simple and so intricate at the same time. That was what my MA quest was for. I could never find a MA that was logical to me. We joined the next week (I had to think about it;). The first class we attended was actually a snow in. James Earles and I were the only people to show up except for Lahong Guro Klement. Imagine my surprise when I landed a semi-private on my first day. A month later I dropped the kendo class followed my priority. I knew that I would be there every day possible. I must have a good poker-face, because no one in the class thought I would last more than 2 weeks. Here I am. About a month ago Mike, James and I all tested for our next levels together. It's so cool and unique to be still together with the friends that I started my journey with. Not only do I have the same friends, but now I have a bunch more. Patrick N. Henderson" Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 08:06:40 -0700 Subject: eskrima: First Experience w/FMA I lived and worked in the Philippines from 1980 to 1984. I was a criminal investigator with the USAF, and was very blessed to have 15 DOD Special Police/Criminal Investigators working for and with me. They were all Filipinos and adopted me as part of their group. At the time I was very involved with Police tactics and the martial arts. I was enrolled in an advance Karate class on Base, (but not really getting what I wanted). I was approached by 3 of the DOD officers and invited to "play" sticks with them. Now I knew they were good, because I had seen them chop through elephant grass and bamboo with grace and ease; I even saw one of them fight a cobra and win, (cut his head clear off with a bolo). All three of these gentlemen represented different styles but they all played together. One of them was even the representative of his own families style, (60 years old and also a former Philippine Scout). Now here is the rub of the story: I turned them down! I had been so into the "karate/kung-fu" mindset, I did not want to consider anything else. They were very understanding, but they gave me a certain look, and looking back now, I recognize it as one of pity. It would not be until 1989 that I would get another invitation to "play". At first I began to turn down the offer again, but thank God my friend and now teacher of 10 years, Sifu Jay Cabauatan would not let me become a victim of my ignorance once again! Nothing compares with FLOW! I'm sure I would have found it eventually in other martial arts training, but I think I got to that level a whole lot faster with our beautiful art! Just a quick note, I will be in Honolulu, Hawaii, June 29th to July 5th for Sijo Emperado's (KAJUKENBO) Birthday Seminar and Tournie. If anyone else is there, look me up, I will be with 6 of my students representing the "Christian Martial Arts Ministry". May God Bless You All! Chaplain (Sifu) Brian T.
