Tim, If you are looking for a material that is strong, shock resistant, and heavy, I would recommend polycarbonate. This is the material is used for police pr-24 batons. From my research, there is no "plastic" that is more shock resistant (and this is what we want when clashing sticks!) Hi Tim, Heres what I do for "Practice" It also depends on the devirsity of your practice how hard you are going to be hitting these sticks also.... I go to your local Hard-ware store, and buy your 1 and 1/4 inch wooden Dowlrod. I then take Black normally or differnet color electrical tape and make them all "pretty" so to speak... But for practice those are the most enexpensive form of sticks. They do break after a while, of really hard hitting.. but they will take a good beating... But make about 3 pair and if a one or a set breaks so what your only out a few bucks... verses the Rattan standard wich cost like $20 and even after a while they tend to splinter off also.. I also use plastic pvc pipe for lite to medium contact also... so anything will work... I used to as a kid take an old broom handle and cut it down...If all your going to do is practice then the best way is the enexpensive way in my book... I hope this helps... stickfighter ------------------------------ From: "Kenneth M. As of today not only have I not received the book, but have had no respnoses to e-mails, regular mail, nor even a voice mail to Mr. Assli's residence. The original order form insisted on only a money order as payment, so I have no other way to trace the order. I am curious if anyone else has had a similar problem with their order, as well as if anyone may know of a way to contact Mr. Assli regarding this matter. Ken Louis MD ------------------------------ From: NYJKDC@aol.com Date: Sat, 13 May 2000 19:44:29 EDT Subject: eskrima: Dr. Gyi Seminar, NYC (WOW) Just got back from spending the entire day with one of the greatest warrior of all time, Dr. Gyi. This man has "been there & done that". I never experienced anyone like him. The seminar topic was on the "Gurkha Kukri". First he started with telling us his first hand experience with the Kukri. He had his album that he shared with the seminar attendees which showed the effectivness of the weapon. For example, he had a picture of a Japanese sniper, who he had literally sliced off the top of his head clean. And talked about the pictures he left at home with the guy split directly down the middle from his head to his testicles. That just blew me away and I knew I was in for an interesting day. Just watching his movement, even in his mid-seventies. You can just sit there and imagine. When he stroked the kukri, you got to see that that's what alot of Japanese saw for their last time. The killing blow. But he also talked about how he honored all those that fell before him in battle. He also said "that a true warrior is one who knows when to stop and is one who shows compassion." Also, he mentioned when he was asked by people such as Guro Inosanto, Pendekar Paul DeThouras, Pa Suwanda and so on, "What kind of Warrior would you like to be?" he replied, an "American Warrior". The reason he said was that for many years he fought side by side with american soldiers, and that america was the only country that when they defeated (Japan, Germany, Vietnam)...they gave them their independence and helped rebuid them. Which is something that no one in history has ever done. The topics he covered on the kukri started out with Basic Information on the Kukri. Such as, 1. Cleaning and Sharpening the sword, 2. Drawing, 3.Salutation with the Kukri, 4. Safety Rules, which I thought was very interesting. He said that that's one recommendation he would give FMA practioners. People underestimate the damage that the weapons that they use can be dangerous to themselves and others. You don't want to lop off your buddies arm (like Dr. Gyi did) because you extended your swing too far. 5. The Nine Target Zones - which was the Kukri numbering system. It was a grid from one through nine, which was 1-2-3 on top 4-5-6 in the middle and 7-8-9 on the botton. So an angle one would be 3-5-7. An angle two would be 1-5-9. Decapitation 1-2-3. And so on...Which is actually not from Bando but from Alexander the Great. Then we worked different combinations with the different draws. If anyone has the opportunity to work with this man...DO NOT PASS IT UP! This is the man that Guro Inosanto crawled out of bed with a temperature of 103, to go train with. Simo Paula asked him what do you think your doing, he replied "You don't understand. This is Dr. Gyi." Now I see Guro's point. I'll be out there in LA. Can't wait for tomorrow! Nick Sacoulas BTW I will be hosting a seminar with Guro Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny this July 15th & 16th in the New York City area. I will be posting more detailed information on that soon. Also, this coming weekend, May 20 & 21, I will be hosting Ajarn Chai Sirisute in Queens, New York. I would privately like to get your opinions on the role of OSI agents and overzealous Air Force prosecutors. This is off topic so hit me privately. I understand that Air Force OSI agents consider Army CID agents "Cowboys" ? I am also interested in the educational levels and the amount of training you obtain prior to slapping on a gun and investigating Air Force personnel. Note: My comments are not designed to denigrate your specialty in the Air Force (although I have my own private opinions).
