Rocky, You have given back to me my faith that thier are sane people on the "gun issue" in the States that take a logical approach and not a purely one emotional. I particulary like the fact that you say you can't compare the U.S. to other countries, something I have been touting for years. As an escapee from Windsor,Ontario (Detroit's other suburb), I don't think there is another place outside of the States that is more American. But we like gun control! When I watch NRA infomercials what gets on my nerves is how they imply that citizens of courtries were there is strict gun control laws (like Canada and UK) are nothing but pawns and poor them. Are attitude towards guns is different, it is not wrong just different. Somthing else to remember >though is that there are blood born and transported deseases. Yah, I know this is a problem, but think about it - if the guy just wants my purse he can have it, and welcome. However, if he wants me to "get in the car" or whatever, I'll take the chance of catching something yukky and i'll bite/scratch/gnaw an escape route through him. :-/grrrr In the related area of repercussions, I have one student here who hates it when we do "sticks" in class because, as he puts it "if I pick up a stick and hit someone I'm going to jail". Of course, I tell him that the *principles* can be applied to empty-hand...but he's still wary of using sticks. A friend in the Forces also told me something similar, when I jokingly said that I would keep sticks behind the counter for any book thieves; he said I would legally be better off if I just shot the guy! Now, I'm not getting into the gun thing - I'm in Canada, and it's not an issue to me; I just wonder why (if my friends are in fact correct) it is worse to defend yourself with a stick, especially since (if trained) you can control the amount of damage better, and have less chance of getting bystanders. It's sort of like when I went to buy my house, and they didn't want to give me a mortgage because I had no credit history ( I always figured if I don't have the money, I don't buy it). They actually want you to have a history of owing money. So instead of stopping a baddie with a stick, where I can probably do specific and limited damage, they would prefer that I shoot and kill the baddie....? ugh...me go back in cave with books...make more sense... :)jocelyne ------------------------------ From: "Cory Eicher" Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 10:44:54 CDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #244 Crafty wrote: "I would offer that people consider the possibility that the War on Drugs fueled and fuels most of the most horrendous stories of that have touched all of us emotionally as packs of fatherless young males have turf wars over profits unlike anything else they believe they can achieve in this life." Money fuels violence, and the War on Drugs creates an environment, just like Prohibition, in which commodities that are easily produced are greatly desired. Lots of money for those that are willing to break the laws. Lots of people willing to break the leads to lots of money being used by law enforcement to 'fight the War on Drugs'. After enough time, an entire sector of our law enforcement, from the federal to local level, is dedicated soley to this problem. This means (an no offense meant to any LEOs out there... I don't have your job because I don't have the necessary guts to put my life on the line for an ungrateful populace) that BOTH sides of the drug war profit. One side form the inflated prices paid by drug uses, the other by inflated taxes paid by the American public. Oh sorry. I just realized that this has absolutely nothing to do with the FMA.
