I guess you mean the issue 8/1998, where Professor Presas is on the cover and inside there is a chapter. By that time Jeff Dalaney was 4rh Dan and not a Datu. My friend David Hoffman is probably one of the colsest persons to the Professor. He was 5th Dan in October 1999. When I asked the Professor about David being a Datu the Professor said: "I have not announced it yet". If both have been awarded the title, I am very happy for them and congratulate them. But I have not had this information until today. Sure is, that both are excellent Modern Arnis players with huge knowledge and good teaching skills. Definitively worth haveing a look at. All I can say is, that my information was from October 1999 and I know it was corrcet by then. BTW: David Hoffman is hosting the Professor in England end of May. May 27 Birmingham, UK, 1 day seminar. I was having a discussion the other day with some girlfriends. We are all moms of young children. The subject of gun control came up. Now, usually I just stay out of the matter and let my vote do the talking. But these two women (as liberal as they are) tend to be thoughtful and logical. So I challegened them. They wanted childproof trigger locks on all guns. I told them that these locks are available in almost any gun store already. (They were surprised). They wanted mandatory child locks WITH the guns. I asked them how this is going to address those who don't use some type of lock already when there are children in the house. (Just because it is included, it would be used?). "But guns are responsible for so many deaths..." they said. And so many have been saved when a victim used a gun to protect his/herself. I was getting them to listen... so I decided to drop the "Feminist" approach on them: Guns and other weapons are the great equalizer for women. If a woman is attacked by a larger, stronger, faster and more ferocious man, what are her chances of survival without a ton of self defense training? Not good. But give her a gun and some amount of decent training and she suddenly becomes a hard target. Men and women who would take our guns away would effectively strip women of a tool of equality. The woman being stalked, the wife being beaten, the girlfriend who is about to be raped... ask how many of them would have wanted a gun when the attack started. Some of the most die hard women gun advocates I know are rape survivors. I know that the gun is only one of many possible tools. I know its limitations. I do not own one (yet). But I will not give up my right to equality when the sh*t hits the fan. I don't need the government to give me equal rights. All I need is for it to stop trying to take them away. Reading the recent posts about people's first encounter with FMA I was wondering what proportion of list members would consider themselves primarily FMA practioners, as opposed to say JKD or kempo and a bit of kali on the side, as it were. For the record I do consider myself to be mainly an arnisador although I also do a little harimau silat and tai chi. I am also an amateur wrestling coach, but arnis is definitely my main game. - ---------------------------------------------------- Guro Crafty I am looking forward to finally meeting you at the weekend, have a safe journey. Atleast you're not short, ALWAYS outweighed, and blind.:) Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm so blind that I even have difficulty making out the stick from the room in the background (colours aren't that different) when I take off my glasses. I seem to fare better just chucking the stick at the opponent. Bundling him, and then applying some trapping or Muay Thai. However, I don't think that's the point of the exercise. While I'm at it, could I take up a bit more of your precious time and ask one more thing which has been baffling me of late? Escrima seems to be commonly trained along with Muay Thai (which is what I do in different classes but by the same coach), and it is also done with Wing Chun. This suggests that there are similarities or things which complement each other. But I have not heard of Muay Thai been combined with Wing Chun, and if it was I can't really imagine it being done particularly well. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks Jon. ! ------------------------------ From: p.taylor@talk21.com Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 20:03:53 BST Subject: eskrima: twirling metal bars -good or bad idea? twirling metal bars -good or bad idea? I can often be seen wandering around my house twirling a pick axe handle, primarily to develop the strength in my wrists. Although it has had the added benefit of scaring away to annoying guy that would knock on the door every two weeks trying to sell me bulk frozen fish, when I open the door with it one day. Anyway to my point, I'm now considering stepping up the weight of my training aid by cutting a piece of steal rod and using that to twirl. The PAH is now quite comfortable and I think the extra weight would benefit the practise. My only concern is that I may not be doing my wrists any favours by doing this. I do tend to twirl the PAH slowly so I don't damage my wrists and I would do the same with the bar. I'm still in two minds as to whether it would be of benefit to me. So is it a good idea or not? Paul PS I'm changing the URL for the www.eskrima.demon.co.uk site to www.eskrima.co.uk and updating it soon, I know its only been 18 months since the last update but I'm keen ;o) So if anyone has a link to the page please could they change it. It you want a link from the page just mail me. Both sites should be up until the update which is due the end of June. - -------------------- talk21 your FREE portable and private address on the net at http://www.talk21.com ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 00:49:58 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Honored A Howl etc: So what's an old man to do?
