Yip, Crafty ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 10:17:29 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Copenhagen soccer riots - mass attack The UK tv screens are full of opposing football fans rioting in Copenhagen. One of the teams competing for honours hosted an english team earlier in the competition where two English fans died due to stab wounds. The stage was set. The tv cameras showed mass fighting in which a huge array of weapons were being used. The initial spark came on Tuesday night as the bars were full. No trouble was reported and Turkish fans outnumbered English fans 4:1. People (english fans) sitting in a bar were distracted by a turk knocking on the window of the bar with a knife. Behind him was a TV camera crew. One of the complaints of many english fans who have a poor record is that the news teams hungry for stories encourage groups to start on them knowing that they will fight back. In this case the spark was lit and the fighting started. Several english fans were stabbed. In the tv scenes there were a lot of weapons used. Flags poles were used and the bars which hold in place awnings outside cafes were also seen in the hands being used like staffs. Tables, chairs and bicycles were also used as two sets of fans ran at each other in an open square. There was no place to escape and you always help your own and middle england may condemn blindly but the basic instinct to mass together and use whatever is available was apparent. What was also apparent was the ability to take blows and still escape or fight back. When you go to the ground you are open to mass stamping and an easy target for weaponry. Most of the stabbing's came from someone running up and sticking it in from behind. While we teach self defence skills or shall we say fighting skills how many of us deal with mass attack. I have the Vunak tapes and they are a valuable tool but how can we look to cover this topic in our schools. This is relevant to doormen who come under mass attack and any civilian in urban areas confronted by a gang baying for blood. pat Aberdeen Martial Arts Group Web site * www.amag.fsbusiness.co.uk ------------------------------ From: "Jonathan Broster" Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 10:55:58 GMT Subject: eskrima: Twirling metal bars There was a thread about training with metal bars a while ago. I like to use a few different things: rattan, kamagong and a steel pipe. I tend to work up in weight during my training session and always finish off with a light stick to loosen off. Be careful with really heavy sticks, especially on any abaniko type stuff where the movement is limited by the range of movement of your wrist. I also like to work on a bag with a really heavy stick, combinations with abaniko are fine because it is the bag that is limiting the range of motion. My Sifu is certified under the Inasanto accademy and therefore our school has a heavy FMA component. In fact, I would say that the curriculum is split evenly between FMA and JKD. This works very well. I have found that the two compliment each other. This is especially evident with empty hand techniques. The JKD trapping techniqes easily flow to FMA takedowns and locking tecniques. Likewise, the un-stickiness of FMA sensitivity drills like Kamot or Habud (sp?)compliment the sticky-hand sensitivity drills of JKD (eg. the Boong Sao-Lop Sao drill. Student learn the different "feel" of these types of drills and can train to recognize differences in the energy their opponent is giving them , and how to repond to these energies in the most efficient way. I enjoy JKD and FMA equally, and I really don't think that I could do one without the other, I gotta have my kicks as well as my sticks :-) Kim (aka Thai Girl) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 06:34:55 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [none] ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #253 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
