It is really easy to strain or pull a muscle in the wrist or forearm if you try to say, throw a full speed abinico. Once you are fairly comfortable with that (it shouldn't take too long) start working solo drills, counters, seguidas, the 64 attacks, etc. Then move on to slow sombrada, lock-and-block, back and forth, whatever. Remember, start slow and be controlled, especially with a partner. It's easy to crack a knuckle with that much weight behind even a little slip. Things that are merely painful with light and relatively soft rattan or wood are dangerous with steel. I've found that the pipes really add to my weight training and they are an excellent addition to any solo workout>> I second what Cory had to say. Stating slow is the key to minimize the possibility of injury. At least 2 to 3 days a week I work on power generation through weight training and swinging metal bars. I was able to get 1 1/4" solid stainless steel rod that I cut to 28" long sections. I start out by warming up with light sticks, then go to 1 1/4" rattan, and then to the stainless. I then start by swinging ten power shots through each strikeing angle (angle one right side ten times, angle one left side ten times etc...), then switch to the left side and do the same. By this time I've worked up a darn good sweat. The rest of my work out depends on what I feel like working on at the time. I end my work out by going back to the 1 1/4" rattan which at this point feels like swinging a pair of toothpicks lighting fast. I definitely feel that it's a beneficial addition to my training routine. Greetings! There is an interesting speculation that the martial art to be used to choreograph Yoda's style is FMA. If you are interested, surf over to.... http://theforce.net/episode2/ The info is hidden, so you must follow the directions and drag the mouse cursor over it. There are couple of files to look at here, which you might find interesting. I did. "Daddy's Home!!!" O-nami Family battle cry Jeffery L Harris JLHOnami@aol.com ------------------------------ From: rocpas@ameritech.net Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 00:55:55 -0400 Subject: eskrima: coming full circle You know their might be something to that old saying, "with age comes wisdom", not that I am as old as some of the geezers on the list:-) But lately I have been thinking a lot about Modern Arnis, And Gm Presas's idea of teaching. I have long known that Modern Arnis is a self defense art and not necessarily an art to turn one into an Escrimador. However I never really realized just how far ahead of the other Grand Masters Remy was as far as getting the art known to people. He realized back in the 60s that there are 2 types of people that come to the martial arts. Those who want to learn some self defense as their life style will permit, between family work, school ect... which makes up the vast majority of the students. Then the die hards who want to become complete martial artist and really dig deep into the arts, which make up a much smaller amount. Now obviously being a Moncol Balintawak man, and an Anciong Balintawak man, Remy was obviously the later of the 2. But when he set out to spread the art of Arnis I think he realized that Karate had come up with the ultimate formula for success, keep it basic and self defense orientated and you will succeed. Which he did, and many other GMs have benefited from the exposure that he brought the FMA's. He practically invented the seminar gig. What he did is so phenomenal, that one particular GM actually tried to steal his art thinking he was dead, and in a 1974 issue of Karate international ( look it up, I won't name names and get into a pissing match, but it is a matter of public record) they had to publish an article retracting this other gentleman's claim as the head man to Modern Arnis and apologize to Remy, aint that a kick in the head!!! And yet to this day many FMa'ers seem to snub him, they will interview and acknowledge all these other GMs, yet never Remy ( one of the few remaining fighters left ) I think partially because they don't understand him, or his art. Hey I was his big dog for a number of years and I to fell into this trap, Hell part of the reason I broke away was because I got tied of proving to all the traditional FMa'ers that I was different that I could compete on their level. Unfortunately in reality the main reason I could compete was cause Remy always trained me in the traditional way, which I later came to realize. But none the less his art was and still is vastly misunderstood. In the last few years I have realized that those who come to me to learn Cuentada DeMano for the most part often feel lost. Because it is an art that is designed to fight against other trained artist from all disciplines along with the street stuff. So people who only train occasionally due to their life style and can't really make a commitment become easily frustrated, with the complex at first but ultimately simple tech. of the art. Just this morning I actually had a student explain his scenario in just this way. That's when it really struck me that I really should be offering a class in Modern Arnis for just this reason. This student is not interested in becoming an Escrimador, he simply wants to learn some weapon/empty hand self defense for his own well being, but his time is very limited. I explained the above scenario to Guru George Darish of Bukti Negara who sub leases space from me, and found that he has actually run into this same scenario with Pentjak, because of its advanced nature, his students that are very busy and can only make class periodically are having much more trouble, than they would if they were to actually take say a basic Kickboxing for self defense course. So with the encouragement of Manong Buot, and my top student Master Hal Edwards, I will be contacting Professor soon, and working out an agreement with him, as to how and what I will teach. I will as I have in the past help to promote him and his art, to prove that Modern Arnis is a highly functional self defense art. I have always credited Remy for what he has done for me and in all actuality it is because of our closeness that we tend to fight and bump heads constantly. Actually I miss the old man, he was always like a second father to me. So as I return to Modern Arnis ( on a limited basis ) I will NOT get involved in politics, I have no desire to go on a rank hunt, or have any intention of being at the top of his heap again, I'll leave all that to the Ultra supreme Datu's and multi mega black belt masters. My main purpose is to spread the art of Cuentada DeMano, and secure the future for Anciongs original Balintawak, while helping my old Master/friend/mentor as much as possible. So don't be surprised if I start popping into a few seminars hear and their. For my CDM guys don't worry we will still be rocking and rolling. You hear that Toto WERE GOING HOME, WERE GOING HOME !!!! Martial arts masters were making a living doing seminar gigs back in the 19th and early 20th century.
