The "Front-kick.mpeg" is from Jon Howard. He mentioned it in the last digest. The "Side-kick.mpeg" is another funny one. As before you can download it from http://www.abanico.de/html_e/index_e.html and then klick the "button news/offers" at the top of the page, just beside the german flag. Unter the "under construction" you find the 3 mpeg files and you can download it from there. Again, a short feedback would be appreciated. I have nothing against their art and their founder. Prof. Remy Amador Presas is also like a father to me, we met in the Philippines I believed in 1974 before living going to Malaysia and Japan. I met Remy Presas when I was just 11 years old, He's wife Rosemarie and his right hand and most thrusted student Willy Annang and several Modern Arnis practitioner went to my hometown Paete on July of 1975, to witness OUR PAETE ARNIS TOURNAMENTS, where my Father (Felipe "Garimot" Baet) remain the Champion. The Modern Arnis offer us to be the member of the Modern Arnis Federation of the Philippines(MAFP) that give us the opportunity to teach the art of Traditional Arnis not Modern Arnis in various School and Colleges. Remy Presas never returned from his tour in the US claiming that he was under suveilance from the Governments. On 1978 I went to Manila with Willy Annang to test for my Black Belt in Modern Arnis, I did the Basic Curriculum and I have to sparred to some student of Willy Annang, Rolan Dantes was present to that Testing. I was awarded Lakan isa, after that I return every year to advance and get higher rank. Willy Annang told me that I dont really need to test anymore all I have to do is keep fighting. Because NO ONE in the other Modern Arnis Clan in Manila have the experience that I have in Full Contact Stickfighting Tournaments(NO PADDED). When Willy told me that at that time I already earn Lakan Tatlo in Modern Arnis. I never return to get my test anymore until one day they took everything from me (my Teaching opportunity). You know how hard to earn a living in the Philippines. I was attack by 10 College Students whom are taken Arnis class with me in Eastern Laguna Colleges. This is Self defense situation so I have to do what I have to do, I relied on my Buno and Arnis skill to survive to that attacks. I am able to scape after leaving them with broken limb and injured. Yes I was able to scape from them but not from the Governments and Schools. I was brought to trials took away everything from me, they took my opportunity to teach and banned me to teach Arnis. So I left home and turned my self to Head of (MAFP) Willy Annang, he is already ill at that time, I went to Rosemarie(Remy's wife) and ask for help to give me a chance to teach again, that chance never came through again in the Philippines. On 1993 Prof. Remy Presas give a Seminar here in Coral Spring Florida, we got a chance to meet again after long years of not seeing. He almost not recognised me but when I told him some stories he finally remember me. He was accompanied with Pages from S.Carolina. Prof. Remy offer me to open a School of Modern Arnis Here in Miami and promised me that he will make me the highest Modern Arnis Rank here in the US. I choosse to teach the Garimot System that I started, back in 1989 here in Miami. But he took one of my students asked him to go to his Seminar in Massachuset and came back with the 5th Degree Blackbelt Certificate and telling others that I learm from this guy. His name was Adam Castillo a three months student of mine turned 5th degree blackbelt in few day seminar. My points is how many Modern Arnis has to go through the same pattern as Adam to become high ranking Blackbelt of Modern Arnis in few days. I can't imagine how many people out there has the same story of Adam. I am not saying their are not Qualify but I think they should cover themselve a little, not so obvious. I hear the same stories to someone else.. I love Ama(Father) Remy that how I called him to me he still one of my mentor. But I cannnot believed what is happening in his arts. God bless him hopefully you guys controll this on happenings. its dis- grading the art of Arnis in General. I am sorry I have to voice this out its been a long time I keep it in my chest. I am not saying you Modern Arnis Instructor out there are all bogus, I believed some are. Its hard to know who is who also in Modern Arnis. I bet you a lot of you dont know who Remy Presas higher ranking student in the Philippines prior of his journey in the US? Id like also to see the both of them to settle their differences and come together and pool their abilities.(Now that would be something to see!!!) Barry Note: Ernesto and Remy were not on speaking terms the last i heard. ------------------------------ From: "Ernest Westbrook" Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 16:43:52 GMT Subject: eskrima: Thanks for the Datu Names from Modern Arnis "tim hartman" , wrote: >Subject: eskrima: Datu >Greetings All- >The topic of datu has reared its ugly head again. There >are four datus in the federation: Shishir, Kelly >Worden, Rick Journales >and Dieter K. I am sorry that this request for information might be controversial. I was merely trying to help a friend who is writing an undergraduate reseach project. One piece of his research dealt with titles and the accompanying requirements. Since he has a good idea about what the requirements for Datu are, his only other need was for an acurrate listing of people with the title. Thanks to Kevin Black, Tim Hartman, Brian Johns, Bill Lowery and Dieter Knuttel, the consenus of who holds the title under Professor Presas is limited to four people. Mr. hartman's post seems to finalize the list. There was no ill intent in my request and I have no opinions on the matter. >Professor Presas was in Buffalo April 27th through May 1st and we >discussed the topic of datu, as I did with him last summer. I did not read your post because I was not a member of this digest at that time and I confess that I did not scan the achieves because I did not have a clue as to if and when this topic may have come up. You are a very modest and humble kind of person, Mr. Hartman. In this age of rank inflation and title poliferation, to turn down an opportunity to become one of only five in an international system under a world recognized GM is indeed something else again... >I had also heard the rumor that Jeff Delaney was promoted to Datu. >He had >told me that this was not the fact, but Jeff is a >part of the senior board members, which may have been where the >confusion >was. I will be seeing the professor the first weekend in >June at his >Texas summer camp and I will show him a copy of the >digest on this topic. My question with regard to this question on the digest is, what is there to show Professor Presas. You have answered the question as fully as possible as far as I can tell and there are just four people who hold that title. I am not even sure what the relavence of the "senior board" is in your reply. Thanks again for your input and help.
