Concerning Chads points in his posting (I hope you have forgiven me for poking fun) From: Chad < Subject: eskrima: Re: Full Contact or Not (from another post list) Good points made. How many times do we have to face the questions on how intense should you fight. I myself, and I know of others, tend not to do it in public class now but will create the environment where we can go in private and spar heavily. There are too many out there looking for a chink in which to attack you. I had one guy take issue with the respects that I do at the start of the class. He felt it was pagan and as a christian it was unacceptable that I had forced him into practising a pagan ritual! After explaining that the respects was actually left open to interpretation in order that it was universal and not offensive he was satisfied that he had provoked the argument and had stood up for his cause. I never did see him again and nor did we really miss him either. Returning to the point, I have heard Guro Inosanto eloquently phrase this so many ways over the years and I have heard his instructors say the same things. The concept of the goal kicker practising kicking without ever touching a ball is one, but the best for me is the one of the swimmer who practices on dry land, never to enjoy his skills in the water! I freely admit that I don't do enough stick sparring and no full out stuff. I do spar full out at times in other areas like Muay Thai and groundfighting and I do realise that you cannot train all the time at this intensity. This seems to be a misconception that some have of the full contact clubs that exist and one I daresay the fc guys do like to exagerate. I don't mean that as an offensive criticism but this is a good thread. At what intensity do you train at and how often do you go at maximum? pat Aberdeen Martial Arts Group Web site * www.amag.fsbusiness.co.uk ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 08:47:31 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Notice of USAKF/USJJ Nationals FYI, forwarding. Ray - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Martial Arts Friend, We want to remind you and cordially invite you to the USA Karate/US JuJitsu/ US Kobudo Nationals Championships and combined Halls of Fame and National Tournament on July 14-15-16. This is the USAKF¹s 26th annual event and we hope you can attend. We will be in Canton, Ohio, just South of Akron-Cleveland, and are within driving distance of most East Coast, Southeast, and Midwest cities. The competition has always been spectacular and this year we will include the US Ju-Jitsu Federation. The facilities are great, the competition will be fun and we are sure that you will agree that this is the best ever. We are going strong. As you know, we changed our mission from representing the complicated bureaucracy of the Olympic Committee to that of developing karate in the USA. That always was and still is our real pleasure.
