Now don't get me wrong, I am Filipino and Damn Proud of it too. I know Stuart and James feel the same also. But, I want to be effective. Part of the reason I use the term "Philippine Fighting Arts" is to not limit to sticks, kicks, blades, wrestling, etc. The arts I learned came from a Filipino man who learned from his father and two uncles, who came from the Philippines. Hence, the Philippine Fighting Arts. Now, the way that I was taught this was, there is no wrong way, it is what feels right to you. This is the same basis of Bruce Lee's philosophy. You were wrong if you got hit, you were right if you didn't and hit your opponent. Buce once said to Dan somthing to the likes of,"be proud in being a Filipino, but don't let it limit you." Or somthing to the likes of it. What does it mean? As a warrior, be effective. The Philippine Fighting Arts were always an evolving one, so what is "Traditional FMA" it was always evolving. I'll relate an experience that Stuart and I went to a seminar(won't say his name) but it was with a very prominent figure in the FMA. He looks like he hasn't practiced in a very, very long time. Anyway, he thought Stuart and I were training to hard so he came over to "show" Stuart somthing. He didn't do what he was supposed to be doing, instead he tried to "catch" Stuart, but Stu just did and outside deflection and stopped the stick right in front of his face. He was very surprised, and looked for words, when he finally found them, he told Stuart, "Not bad, but your footwork was off." Stuart and I wanted to bust out laughing. Anyway, the point is, do we want to be a "Filipino Martial Artist" and limit ouselves to that? Or do we want to be an effective martial artis/fighter/warrior and therefore becoming a "Filipino Martial Artist". I'll say this also, in Hawaii, you got Hawaiians and you got Hawaiians by heart. The same goes for any culture. ===== Check out our web page at http://www.fullcontacthi.com and visit Chad's Corner-Full Contact Stickfighting in Hawaii. My first formal class (talk about new eh?) was last friday and can tell you my heart longs for more. I go in almost everyday but mostly cardio so far. This is a mission for me and I will not fail in seeking knowledge, understanding and friendships too there is a fun side to MA afterall :) There's some MA in my background so certain things have come easy, others I have to "empty my mind and let it flow", and yet more I have to adapt due to certain physical challenges. In just the past few weeks I've found this list (a wealth of info), learning the rich culture of FMA (wow, Lapulapu), went back to the dojo (FMA/Kenpo), started cardio training (wheez), learned more about my GM which I never knew (and I've known this person since I was a teen!), met Guro Ernesto Presas (!!!), what I'm trying to say is doors are opening in life again with the help of MA and I'm walking through them as brave as I can. Have never met any of you but your words, thoughts and spirit are with me - I value all immensely- I hope this mana I'm sending through the net reaches you too! So I consider you all my introduction to Eskrima and I love it. Best regards, Phil now back to 1-2-3, 1-2-3 1-2-3, 1-2-3 whack whack whack WHACK WHACK WHACK :^) !!!!! ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 8 Jun 2000 03:57:07 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [none] ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #282 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
