You can get a spyderco for between 25-70 dollars and most benchmade models are around 100. BUT, to get a custom knife maker to do anything that folds for under 250 may be very difficult. Not to mention, whatever s/he makes will still be an unexact copy of whatever you are carrying, while if you carry a Delica, for example, you could practice with the exact same blade, opening action, etc. Jerry ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 01:41:45 -0400 Subject: eskrima: June Pekiti seminar update YEAR 2000 SEMINARS WITH TUHON BILL MCGRATH June 24th & 25th Minneapolis, MN Knife & Advanced Single Stick Overview Contact: Mr. Rick Faye (612) 331-6440 MNKALI@aol.com July 22nd & 23rd Detroit, MI Hand vs. Knife & Single Stick Subsystem Intro Mr. Chris Malgeri (810) 616-0580 Jkdgym@aol.com August 7th Las Vegas, NV Police Counter Knife (L.E.O.'s & CCW permit holders only) Mr. Jon Gentile (702) 222-1950 igore@thegrid.net Sept. 23rd & 24th New Iberia, LA Single Stick Subsystem Mr. Dan Terrell (337) 369-3657 dterrell@eatel.net Sept. 29th to Oct. 2nd Hannover, Germany Advanced Knife, Hand & Single Stick Mr. Oliver Nickels Phone (49) (511) 371-255 Fax (49) (511) 371-3355 http.www.Kenpokan.de Oct. 21 -22 Helsinki, Finland Solo Baston 64 Attacks Mr. Kaj Westersund esa.halminen@pp.inet.fi Dec 2nd & 3rd Myrtle Beach, S.C. You are like a walking encyclopedia of martial knowledge. The Dempsey jolt is a must for martial artist, it does however require some balls to properly execute because of the forward commitment and is used more so by brawlers, with some exceptions like Tommy Hearns, but nonetheless it is an excellent punch. This punch alone has won a number of street fights for me, I do modify it a little bit by using my palm instead of a fist, to try and save my already abused knuckles. You'll notice the punch is more prevalent amongst East Coast and Detroit fighter, I have no Idea why! Dempsey was also one of the first to really develop the bob an weave, he had a habit of weaving so low some times that his chin would be level with his knees. Making him a hard target for tall opponents. For more great boxing books, check out basic boxing strategies by Floyd Patterson, and Cus DeMata's (sp) book, I don't know the name , I think its " Boxing by the numbers. Who publishes it? >> Mike, It is out of print, and a tough one to find. I looked for it after Ned and Marc both recommended it. I finally got a copy just a couple months ago from someone in Europe. Found out about it on an e-mail list like this one, and then sent a money order over seas for it. A bit expensive, but at least I have a copy now. It's been a while since I read Ned's boxing book, so I can't tell you off hand how similar they are, Dempsey's is worth reading if you can find one. I'm glad I finally was able to add one to my library. Keep your eyes open and one may show up. BTW, Ned has a new one on boxing coming out that should be a good read. Great line Crafty! > | Actually I think the emotional/psychoclogical benefits continue for quite a long time-- indeed, the rest of one's life-- but that is a different point. As for the sense in which you mean it, I would say that the nature of the benefit evolves over time, but that growth continues. As for Fernando's fight with Big Erv: 1) BE was a classic ground and pound kind of fighter. He brought his football linebacker background to the closing aspect of the game. His stick skills were quite moderate (had less than a year of training in this regard) and he often exploited the head gear in order to close. For example, the time he tackled James Stacey into a tree the video shows he took some 12-14 shots to the face on the way in. Good work James! 2) Fernando already was a highly regarded BJJ black belt with plenty of proper vale tudo training. For someone of his skill level for Fernando to close against BE's stick was no big deal. Once on the very unfamiliar position of being on his back, BE was out of his element. I have video of his teacher training him with a 100lb plus bag of bricks on his back and showing him that the correct response to mount was to turn over, stand up and shake the opponent off. In BJJ of course this is considered very unsound and at least in this fight it so turned out to be.
