On the other hand, part of the reason why is that the older guy knows he has less time to fuss around. He's not going to waste time because he knows he doesn't have enough lead left in his pencil to dick 'em, deck 'em and dunk 'em in a long drawn out tussle. Therefore it's over real quick. To this end while technical skill will fall before aggression, aggression is a limp noodle when it comes up against competence. ------------------------------ From: "william schultz" Date: 22 Jun 2000 21:21:44 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Whidbey Island Greetings. I've have a new student who will be moving to Whidbey Island W.A. in late July/early August. He just started training with me and is very enthusiastic to continue training in the FMA (I believe that he will). I found one instructor/school listed in the FMA Database. I thought I would also check with the folks on the digest to see if I could turn up any more leads. Any info would be greatly appreciated. To an extent, that is partially what is needed to win. Tuhon Mcgrath has given superb examples of applied aggression for me to draw upon (as have several other instructors I have had the privilege to train with) and I hope he does not mind me sharing this scenario (it's in my words, but his concept). The example I like is the one where you come home late at night and find an intruder at the bottom of the stairs and hear your wife/child/mother/etc. screaming for help from the upstairs bedroom. The intruder before you may or may not be armed. your options are limited. You may or may not have a weapon(handgun,knife,stick,mace,etc.). you have only one option to save the loved ones' life and that is to go through your opponent as quickly as possible with little fanfare and no hesitation. You blow through this opponent and make your way to the bedroom, only to find another intruder/opponent standing before the doorway, blocking your way. the screams are even louder and more pleading by this time. You get through the door by any means necessary and deal with whatever is on the other side as expeditiously as possible. You have only seconds to engage the intruders and emerge victorious. This is an extreme example, but when you spar or drill, and are attempting to hit every fine point of the drill/technique and make every component of this work, that is the time to think of this scenario (or at least it is for me). I don't mean to strike as hard as you can every time, but train with that deliberate intent in mind. Human beings tend to strive harder when we have a goal. What is more priceless than the life/lives of those that you love? Ken PS: I'd like very much to hear the thoughts of the rest of the digest members' on this topic and any other visualization techniques. ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 12:00:58 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Savate book by Salem Assli I have ordered the savate book by Salem Assli but still have not received it.
