Just a couple questions: A. How would we focus on a certain technique - or would we focus on the varying techniques for the same movement - Ex. defending against a straight punch, my MA background is Capoeira, Muay Thai, Boxing, some Panantukan, and some BJJ. So how would we focus on dislaying effective movements of attack, defense, etc.. B. how do we keep from ego's being involved - since my entrance into the MA arena, I've seen some of the biggest egos which make it difficult to actually LEARN effectively. With these two things out of the way, I would love to exchange Martial ideas and techniques with other MA's ------------------------------ From: Loki Jorgenson Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 18:37:58 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #305 :: ::From: "IESA" ::Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 09:27:37 -0800 ::Subject: eskrima: Just a thought... :: ::We were talking yesterday and an idea came up. We formed a loose knit organization called the Vancouver Kali-Silat Association with about 10 teachers in as many styles from the area http://www.cecm.sfu.ca/~loki/VKSA/ and held Annual Joint Training Seminars. Short write-ups of the events are at the site listed above. Typically we would have 10-12 teachers, some invited from outside the Vancouver area (Prof Trigg was at our very first one in 1995), and have about 60+ students present. It would run only one day, so it was a very long day - typically 10:00-18:00. We felt that it would be hard to hold the group together for two days in a row so we chose to pack it all together in one. Typically there was a BBQ afterward. Each teacher would lead for 30-40 minutes. Although there was some attitude from some instructors, most would train along with everyone else when they weren't teaching. It was amazing to see!! From what I heard from others, it was unusual that we were able to bring so many different groups and styles together under one roof. There just tends to be way too much attitude and posturing and politicking to make it happen. So, although the momentum has largely fallen out of the VKSA, I'm grateful that we had such a good thing going for as long as we did. And why did it change? Many of the best teachers have moved out of the Vancouver area. The most important one being guro Louie Lindo who now lives in Calgary. He was instrumental in putting the Joint events together and making them work. Although no one was ever the titual head, he was definitely the heart of the VKSA and held us all together. He made a big contribution to the whole kali-silat community. We were sad to see him leave. If you are lucky enough to be able to pull it off, go for it! It was great for us. And I think the community would really benefit. - -- 'gards, /\ Pekiti-Tirsia kali / \ silat Jati Wisesa Loki Jorgenson < MANOyBASTON Martial Arts > / __ \ Dog Brothers MA loki@pekiti-tirsia.org (604) 254-0240 / _L \ Majapahit Empire www.pekiti-tirsia.org/ManoBaston/ /________\ (Inosanto-IMAIA) ------------------------------ From: "Nate Defensor" Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2000 01:28:26 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Mike Inay's schedule ...Could someone be kind enough to post Mike Inay's seminar schedule in the next one or two or three months to the best of their knowledge? My school plays host to a great many other F/MA'rs both locally and traveling and I would be honored to forward your info to the GM. (btw, what's IESA remember I'm a newbie still :) (and it's not here www.iesa.com that for sure! I don't know what that is) Anyhows, the school also plays a part in local fund raising, like tonight we hosted a neat performing arts show/benefit (mr.videographer here) The next big bay area event that I know of is that San Jose Gasshuku 2 day multi-session gig, I believe July 29-30 http://www.pckilohana.com but I don't think that has any charity associated with it? Are you in SF / maybe visit on a weekend? Feel free to email me if you'd like to reply off-list if you want. Phil ps. BTW Ray it's neat how there is like zero spam/porn/get rich quick cr#%^ on or from the ED! ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2000 8:01:10 PDT Subject: Re: eskrima: Mike Inay's schedule > ...Could someone be kind enough to post Mike Inay's seminar > schedule in the next one or two or three months to the best of their > knowledge?
