Basically it's for deadening the nerves. I have also found that a rubber mallet works well too. Also, letting your training partner sink medium to strong roundhouse kicks into your thigh has a wonderful effect as well. As far as increasing bone density, clinical trials have proved that any weight bearing exercise will increase bone density (even in senior citizens). With that in mind, I think it would be quite possible that conditioning exercises could have a positive effect on bone density. DISCLAIMER--I am not a Doctor, nor do I play one on TV. They $45 each >or $80 a pair........ This is not a knock on Guro Hartman, or anyone else who sells equipment, so nobody get excited, but in Cebu, reasonably good kamagong sticks may be had for about $6.00 (USD). Kind of points out the economics of shipping, handling, taxes, import/export duties, etc., etc., doesn't it? Steve Steve Steve_kbs@dwp.net http://www.geocities.com/eartes/KBS_System_index.html ------------------------------ From: Sidney525@aol.com Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 04:56:50 EDT Subject: eskrima: FMA on The Learning Channel I caught and videotaped the last hour of a 2 hour documentary on the Learning Channel Friday July 7, called Martial Arts-The Real Story. It was pretty good showing a variety of martial arts including Muay Thai, Capeoria, Savate, Indian Kalipirat, and Eskrima. They made a couple of factual errors on the Eskrima section. They featured a Doce Pares instructor out of Jersey City, his last name was Cuestra, originally from Cebu. Anyway they said Eskrima is practiced using a bamboo stick. Further, and what I found really irritating because it perpetuates FMA as not a complete art, was that they emphasized the stick and knife aspect, and then the documentary went on to say how FMA has borrowed empty hands techniques from Judo and karate. The implication was that FMA was only stick and knife and had no empty handed techniques. I guess no one informed them of Panatukan, Kadena de Mano, Buno, or Dumog. Oh well. It still was a fairly decent documentary in general, and the Eskrima section wasn't bad despite the errors. Having only caught half of it myself, I checked the cable guide to see if it was being rerun this month and I didn't see it. If anyone knows when it is rerunning please pass it on.
