The camp was held in Poughkeepsie, on Saturday and Sunday, July 8 & 9. The camp was excellent!!!! and the price was totally unbeatable... $105 for both days. Even with the hotel and meals thrown in, it was less than $300 for the entire event. The opportunity to work with PG Bolden and Sifu Daniel Donzella was greatly appriciated and I would not hesitate to attend any event that either or bo sponsor in the future. Both of these men are very skilled practicioners and teachers. The material blends together so easily abd the holes or opeings note covered in theory, by one is covered by the other. If a camp participant really takes the time to reflect back on the training, he will realize that we were in the presence of near genius. I will be looking forward to working with both of these men again and I believe that they are looking toward a date in Syracuse, NY this coming fall. Excellent camp, gentlemen! Thai conditioning is very interesting. In Bando...it's basically the same. My Saya has also suggested for starters...to simple\y go up and down the shin tapping it lightly with a simple plumbing hose, you can them move to pipes, some even use glass bottles. His emphasis has alway's been light repetition, not trying to go full force...since it can have long term residual effects. The same can be applied to forarm conditioning, such as is done in kung-fu with a partner, not trying to go full impact from the start, but starting light, then going from there. Thus it would make sense the we would call Nate Defensor the Maha Guro or head instructor of the Defensor Method. There may also be a difference in dialectic, seeing that Guro Nate hails from Negros. I am fowarding this e-mail so he can clear anything up on this matter. I understand there are some FMA systems that have limited or no empty-handed techniques at all. My point being is that I consider FMA to have 12 categories of weaponry, empty hands being one of them. Myself coming from a karate/kung fu background, I consider FMA being equal and in many ways superior to what I have seen in other styles in terms of empty-hands techniques. Not that most other martial arts systems don't have a lot to offer to a practitioner, they of course do. Just that FMA techniques in many ways just blow my mind in terms of effectiveness, IMHO. Finally, if one of the key components of FMA is capability to go from one weapon to another, using the same fundamental techniques, just modifying it per the weapon at hand, & when you introduce techniques that don't exactly fit in (i.e. not FMA) as your empty handed techniques, you dilute this unique component of FMA. I've seen footage of Jose Mena, and from what I saw, he took the extreme empty hand movements from his stick work. In fact, so much that I thought it could have used a little bit of this and that. I've never read the book though, so what does it say about Jose Mena's empty hand? Which tape would readers advise to see more, Laban Laro 1, Laban Laro 2, or at the Vortex? ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It is my belief that for an individual to truly become proficient, an extreme amount of dedication is required. This leads many down a spiritual path where winning a conflict is based on overcoming an opponent WITHOUT conflict. Too esoteric? Maybe not. Exepting duals, in a situation where one is attacked by an opponent armed with a knife, the attacker has only one advantage against someone who has achieved this level of dedication , this advantage is suprise. An attacker is in a deluded mind, which may be full of fear, and probably intoxication. At least the attacker will have a 'win win' mind, which will cause his responses to be controled by ego and self- consciousnes. If the suprise advantage can be mitigated, a trained individual should be able to flow with the situation and either establish superiority by inflicting 'superficial' wounds in such a manner as to stop any further attack, or end the attack swiftly. If the opponent continues on with the assault more severe defense (now offense) should end the confrontation in a matter of seconds. I would hope someone who has attained a high level of skill would not EVER initiate an attack (unless in armed combat). This leaves street punks, bar brawlers, and psychotics as test panels. Train to defeat THEM by sound basic techniques, proper situational awarness, solid footwork, and a stong spiritual mindset. Then there is always the Nike defense... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo!
