As solid and polished a practitioner of the FMA as Dan is, having learned from a veritable who's who of a pantheon of eskrimadors as he has, you would imagine that Bruce Lee would have been very eager to learn what he could from him, being such a sponge that he was. I remember watching the big fight scene in Enter The Dragon, and seeing him grab the two sticks and thinking "AWW HELL, here we go!" ------------------------------ From: guronate Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 07:32:35 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Maha Guro title Re Maha Guro title designation: I really did not want to get into this title thread but since there has been a post on the "Maha Guro" title, I will put in my 2 cents. I know that Maha implies greatness. And kudos to those who brought up the fact that this title is never used in the PI or in Iloilo. In our organization - "Filipino Kali-Eskrima Academy of Chicago", we decided to designate this title for hierarchical purposes. We have already given rank to 8 qualified instructors in the past to teach the "Defensor Method of Filipino-Indonesian Martial Arts". To avoid confusion, the whole group decided to designate "Maha Guro" as a name for the founder and a "Guro" title for those who qualify to teach the system. In our own local definition, devoid of any Hindu implications, we decided to call the "teacher of teachers" as "Maha Guro". I, personally prefer to be called by my first name and do not care much for titles and belts. 90% of my teachers and sources avoid using titles, belts and ranking to measure skill level, mastery, and knowledge of the Martial Arts. One reason for putting out a curriculum and a ranking system was to draw students and to establish some sort of legitimacy & organization to this brand of FMA/IMA. We felt strongly that the FMA/IMA should be promoted, propagated and be on display to the public. Since the '70s, personal experience have shown that students and prospects alike seem to identify well with this title/ranking/beltscenario. It seems to add aesthetics and legitimacy to most systems. One other observation is in the last several hundred years there has been alot of linguistic changes to the many dialects in the Philippines. So to be caught up in where the word came from or what word is used more often to designate the head of the system becomes an exercise in Academics. Another angle to think about is anything foreign or any word that is non-Filipino in origin seems to attract attention. The word Arnis itself is non-Malay in origin. Alot of words and phrases in FMA/IMA came from somewhere else. And WEE S., apologies not necessary. I think we have beaten this Maha Guro subject to the ground. There are reviews of these and various other books and tapes on SE Asian styles on my site at: http://www.geocities.com/jonbroster Mabuhay Jon ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Harms/Burke Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 06:39:57 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Hindu influence Yes, I am aware that Mahaguru, comes from Sanskrit- what I was really getting at is 'if the term used to describe the master, or instructor, came from Hindu culture, then did any of the techniques and practices also originate in Hindu culture?' After all Shaolin Arts were brought to China by Bodhidharma (enlightenment of duty) a buddhist monk. Indis has a martial tradition dating back thousands of years and many martial forms are found there, including fighting with blades, spears, staves, clubs, etc.,...
