I've personally had no exposure or meeting to some of these great teachers. I know my grandfather, friends with Floro Villabrille-yet never really taught me, like what we do. He got all excited when I showed him the tapes. I would like to someday talk with Ben Largusa and get his POV. From most of the other teachers/guros that I've talked to, they don't favor and actually discourage this type of sparring, for reasons ranging from "it's bad for the Filipino culture" to "the art is supposed to be beautiful, not gory, and if people continue to spar like this, than the art would be banned in America". Each individual to his or her own. I wonder though, have any of the Masters/GM's been to a Gathering and what was there response? I seems like alot of people dont support this type of training and I wonder how do the masters and grand masters feel about this. Like Angel Carbales, Ben Largusa, and others that have done real death matches. There are some masters that mentioned in Dan Inosantos book that says they do this. - ----------- I can't speak for all of those masters (especially for my never having met any of them), but I did ask Dan Inosanto how he felt about that Dog Brother training methods and REAL contact training when I attended one of his seminars. The way I posed the question was how do you feel about the wearing of minimal protection in your sticksparring like the dog brothers do? He said "What, look at my hands - you don't want your hands to look like this. Wear pads. Not too long ago, one of the guys go his knee cap messed up and he couldn't train for a year." Referring to one of the VERY rare serious injuries that the Dog Brothers have had. That seminar was my first and only encounter with Guru Dan - but I was very impressed by him. To be honest.......upon later reflecting.......Guru Dan has a laundry list of credentials in so many arts over so many years. People say that he has forgotten more about martial arts then most people will ever know. But he paid his dues - and he earned it. My conclusion: He implied that you should train full contact, just train safe so you can keep training. IMHO Within reason we have to pay our dues and earn some martial arts knowledge. Harder contact training, Boxing, Kickboxing, Jui Jitsu and now FMA has given me a perspective on what I think is possible in a fight that I am very glad to now have. I boxed, kickboxed, and grappled with pros in each sport before I got to JKD/FMA and I went just for the Kali, and then I saw the Dog Brother tapes - it took me 2 more years to finally make myself do it - but I did it. It took a lot of emails to Marc Denny (BTW...I'm very appreciative of his taking to time to answer me), and I was very fortunate to train with Burt Richardson, and Ian Wilde another Dog Brother, and now I try to stickfight - NOT QUITE ALL OUT, but fairly hard with minimal rules at least every 2 - 3 months. I think it's something that anyone actively participating in FMA for more then one year should at least do going full out with ads on.....and if they get more serious decrease the protection. It teaches you to be savvy, simple, and brings out the raw determination that you need to be successful in combat and in life. PLEASE KNOW.....this is not some ego trip, and I'm not saying that I'm some super great stick fighter....I am not, I just enjoy the art and the training. Jon....if your remotely serious about your FMA journey - at least do it with the pads on or use padded sticks or something. It's worth experiencing, and I think several people on the list will agree with me on this. Perhaps, it is a bit of a strech to have a kung fu reference within a FMAs discussion, but... sometimes it is necessary to move a bit off the center to make a point. You can see it and the spec sheet at: http://www.negrini.com/Er116LW.htm The Lexan is 3mm thick. Sounds about the same thickness as one finds on F.I.S.T. headgear (the visor of which seemed to hold up well when I smacked it with a rattan). The lexan fencing mask is expensive but would be very cool if it's durable enough for our use. Does anyone on the list have any experience with this mask?
