An alternative which might work and which would solve both problems is perforated stainless steel. You can find companies dealing in perforated metals in the Thomas Register, which is in many college and public libraries. It's a listing of products and who sells them. In the 2000 edition, look under METALS: PERFORATED, in Vol 14, starting on page 27,050. A local metals dealer near you may be able to help. The TR is on the web at http://www.thomasregister.com/ if you prefer electronic access. Not having seen a FIST helmet up close, I couldn't help in fitting a new faceplate to it, but I suspect there's a way. Your local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism may be able to help. I used perf stainless (spray-painted flat black) on my helm for years. The holes were about 1/16 of an inch in diameter. My face was totally hidden from view, but visibility, air circulation and protection were excellent. The only problem was that it cut down on the light, so it was like wearing sunglasses: fine in bright light, but not in dim conditions. It has been brought to my attention that some people are having trouble with the egroups websight. So, I've been asked to post the email address for subscription: subscribe-ChristianDojo@egroups.com Send an empty mail. Some programs (such as AOL) will not send empty mail; it will be sent, however, if you simply put a period in the subject line & message body. Thank you. ------------------------------ From: tenrec Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 02:36:51 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Bohidharma in harms way n stuff Mr. Burke wrote: >I never said there weren't Martial Arts in China before Bodhidharma- I said >_Shaolin Arts_ were brought from INDIA to china by Bodhidharma (this is in >context of the suggestion that since both words Maha and Guru are loan >words from Sanscrit into Filipino, that there may have been an Indian >origin to some facet of the FMA. To quote Britney Spears: Ooops I did it again! (Ooooo, Brtiney....) Inadvertantly stepped on someone's toes, that is... I was merely repeating something I had read somewhere before (an MA publication years ago)...I believe his existence was not directly in question, but rather the degree of influence his teachings had on the CMAs, whether it had to do with introducing Indian MA concepts to CMAs, or yogic exercise practices, or putting a religious/philosophical slant on the CMAs...didn't intend for this to be a misconstrued as an insult in any way... >As a matter of fact Kali is also a Hindu >Goddess of Battle and Death revered by the Thugees- a cult of Hindu >assassins. Also swords and metalurgy were known in India when the Filipine >Islands were still in the Stone Age culture!). As depicted in "The Deceivers" with Pierce Brosnan ("Ali my brother!")...there may be some confusion as to the Kali (Indian) - Kali (Phil) connection, at least in terms of word usage. The Indian term does refer to the goddess, but the Philippine term is a contraction of the word "kalis" which has been translated as knife or blade, but in Tagalog means "sword" or "saber" (this according to the Tag. - English Dictionary of James English). Furthermore, the origin in this dictionary claims that it is derived from the Spanish word "caliz". So the word Kali is actually derived from the Spanish, not the Indian...just like the terms Arnis and Escrima. (BTW, I tend to agree with Pellicer's remarks on the use of Kali in the PI). As regards the influence of IMAs on FMA: AFAIK the degree of influence has never been objectively determined...would be an interesting topic for serious Anthro research though... On another note: thanks to all who emailed me info on the Monadnock baton...I main concern is the weight vs. the Phoenix baton (though its ability to hold up in the thrust is a verry attractive feature)... tenrec tenrec@avcorner.com ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 18:29:49 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Kali Virus FYI: This information was announced yesterday morning from Microsoft. If you receive an e-mail titled "Lets watch TV" DO NOT OPEN IT. It will erase everything on your hard drive. This information was announced yesterday morning from IBM. AOL states that "KALI" is a very dangerous virus, much worse than "Melissa", and there is NO remedy for it at this time. Some very sick individual has succeeded in using the reformat function from Norton Utilities causing it to completely erase all documents on the hard drive. It has been designed to work with Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. It destroys Macintosh and IBM compatible computers. This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it. Pass this warning along to EVERYONE in your address book and please share it with all your on-line friends ASAP so that this threat may be stopped. What I wrote was 'informational' and was not directed at Nate Defensor. I did not even know he used that title until the next issue of the Eskrima Digest when someone mentioned his title. I thought he used 'Guro Nate Defensor'. 2) I read the thread and I did not see anybody criticise Nate Defensor. Please point out who did. 3) All I have read seem to be reasoned comments and informatuonal input. 'Educated comments - well reasoned and thought of' is how I would describe them. Maybe you are too sensitive, perhaps also too fiercely loyal, but that is no way to treat all informational inputs like what I have seen to be criticism of your teacher and take issues. Maybe you should re-read them and think about what is mentioned again after you have cooled down. Sometimes we get too overly zealous of any hint at all that may indirectly apply to our teachers and get hot and shoot out. I myself, am no exception. It is something, we martial artists have to learn over time - to exercise restrain over our fierce loyalties. I have heard comments about Tatang Illustrisimo, Tony Diego, Romy Macapagal and Edgar Sulite, but I have not only exercised restrained, but attempted to make friends with the enemies to understand their grieveances. I can say I am still friendly to someone who used to be active in this Digest who had a problem with Edgar Sulite at a Summer training camp more than 10 years ago. Why shouldn't I? It does not make me less loyal to Edgar. We need not display our loyalties by damning our teacher's critics. To clarify some more, my true and real last name is "Defensor" by birth. It is futile to try to change Maha Guro designation by some English name to satisfy a few opinionated Eskrima Digest posters. Frankly, I personally do not care if my students call me founder or Maha Guro or Guro or Mr. Defensor or Nate or Nathan. On a personal note, I prefer Nate. If anyone has a problem with this title and do not like to use it, it offends none of us or any DM student or instructor. This title/respect thing is sometimes taken way out of context and the end result is unnecessary noise and ridicule about fantasy titles and what have you. For those who want to find out and learn about us, all they need to do is look us up www.kalieskrima.com and come visit or call any of our instructors. I assure you after a few minutes, there will be no confusion in regards to title, what the system is, who, and what we are. Again, this Maha Guro title was decided by my students and I approve it for hierarchical designation. It simply designates me as Maha Guro and instructors I promoted of the Defensor Method of Filipino-indonesian Martial Arts as Guro. Nothing else. No other nonsense like Master Teacher of all teachers or highest teacher or Jesus-like comparisons. No other fears of being challenged or any repercussions from any religious group because this is Chicago and this is the year 2000. No one in our group has any issues with this title. FYI, Sanskrit was used in the Philippines before the Spaniards banned and burned everything in sight. There are a few scholars left that can transcribe Sanskrit versions in Ilongo, Tagalog, Bicolano, etc... In modern Philippines, one will rarely see the use of terms with Sanskrit origins.
