But, kids your age have been known to get arthritic. I suffer from it now too. I feel it has to do with training and I plan on talking to my chiropractor about it. I right now have eased up on that knee. It feels like something is stuck in there. I know it has something to do with the wear and tear too. Well, at least I can predict when a storm is coming now. The whole thing is a family matter among the de Thouars. As such it's imprudent for an outsider to get involved. Had the creaky knees, back, etc.. couldn't even kneel for more than a minute. I suffered like this for about 10 years..What changed things for me was discovering weight training last year..(leg presses, squats, & calf raises).. After a month, the pain in my knees disappeared. A side benefit was that my Kali footwork and explosiveness drastically improved. Of course, consult a physician before you start, but this is what worked for me. Also, taking glucosamine - chondroiton (sp) before bed will help rebuild cartilage as well. Tom << From: "Jonathan" Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 15:02:29 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Creaking Knees Hi I seem to be developing an ailment which may or may not be due to my training... Of late, my knees have been making cracking noises more often than is healthy, such as while getting out of a car(????), wondering around at work etc... It hurts a bit as well and I'm starting to feel like a cripple.:( Does anyone else suffer from this? Is it a result of bad training (I was forced to do knee tormenting stretching a few years ago), or am I just getting on in life (I'm 20). Jon. >> ------------------------------ From: "Jason Inay" Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 09:14:47 PDT Subject: eskrima: Gang Banger and Problem Students Hello All, Just wanted to relate my experiences in this matter. I have on several occasions taught beginning students what one would call "gang-banger" students. What most people have said is quite true. Most of these people can not make it past a few months of training if that. Our arts do not appeal to the fast food consumer. Which is exactly what this type of person is. Most often I see these people move on to other things. If they do continue to persue MA's they usually land and find a home in the Local TKD school. Those that become successful there, few as they may be, later move onto arts more like ours. Most students that would fall under "problem student" category will weed themselves out quickly. Especially if you have a full contact component in your curriculum. The sight of the fighting may interest them, however since it is more of a competition among equals rather than a predator picking on the weakest prey situation; in the long run they just don't last. However, if given the opportunity some may just surprise you. After all, how many of us use our arts outside of the teacher/student situations. Of course that excludes bouncers, LEO's, and Bodyguards. I find that the impact on my student's lives is more of an intagible thing, that helps them manage their lives better as opposed to their fighting prowess. It is the goal of Inayan System to make compitent Eskrimadors, however, I feel the largest impact is the intagible things that Martial Arts gives to the practitioner. Focus, Perseverance, ...... I am sure you all know what I mean. These are the things I believe we all give to our students, and that is why I try to keep my doors open to all prospective students regardless of what stereotype I may put them in. People will surprise you in the most unexpected ways.
