Now, this local grade school is in East Palo Alto, and the students are just getting into gangs at the 3rd-6th grade level. Many intelligent things have been said so far, but I haven't yet seen people comment on things like, "How do I keep the 'bad' students from hurting my 'good' students before they weed themselves out?" One thing I really like that I have learned in my time with Inayan Eskrima is the system of respect. In some martial arts you bow, in others you call the teacher something.. I think the most important thing to do in the 'six gang-bangers come in and want to learn' situation would be to have a talk to them about respect. It sets down expectations from you; to people who rarely have that done for them and rarely have it done well. - -Ron Levy ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 12:59:31 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Hip Escape A Howl etc: Concerning the question on creaky knees: Try this on for size and see if it helps-- KNEES ARE ESCAPE VALVES FOR HIPS. If your hips are tight, your knees get overworked. Properly performed weightlifting certainly can help and is a part of my solution. Look into stretching your hip rotators as well as hip flexors, and strengthening the peak contraction of the glutes and the head of the hamstring that crosses the hip joint. I also experienced this in the past as did my good Friend and training partner. Our answer was yoga and a change in diet. Many of us suffer arthritic symptomes especially in our knees begining in our 20's. This often comes from imporper diet and a traditional American lifestyle (17-24 party hogs). I would encourage you (and everybody in MA)to take up some type of yoga, hatha for rehabilitation and Iengar for stregnth. Not only will you increase flexability, but your joints will recieve proper oxygen and lubrication. As for the relationship of this to your diet, I have a paper writen on this subject which I would be happy to forward to anyone who emails me asking for it. taomonkey@yahoo.com Peace __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I work for an Orthopaedic Clinic and I asked one of the docs here. He said it was most likely due to the muscle not being strong enough and letting the Knee cap slide to the side. When you bend your legs, it has to snap or slide back into place which cause the cracking noise. (This might not be what is wrong with you...my advise is to see a doctor yourself.) He told her to lift weights, small amounts at first (5lbs), by sitting in a chair and lifting her leg without bending her knee. He said that should strengthen that muscle and keep the creaking and creaking down to a minimum. Hope that helps. I understand your point, and I feel basically the way that you do. I would like to say that anyone who has the dedication to learn the basics and stick through it, will become a better person spiritually/morally, etc. However, I have seen it used for wrong. And I'm positive there were "bad" people in the villages that had trained to use their knowledge for less than humanitary ways. Later, there will be a story up under Datu's Corner at the web site, that talks about Escrima Bandits. So when you say, "the level of dedication required to become proficient in these arts is more than most people are willing to give", I agree with you, but(and that is a big but), you said most, and the human personality, and "what-ifs" are so great. I don't want that one that is not of the "most". Bad attitudes are hard to foster the "friends at the end of the day", although a good old fashioned stick fight is a hell of a way to humble someone. For the record though, I am not an instructor, just a student willing to practice and train with others. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It hurts a bit as well and I'm starting to feel like a cripple.:( Does anyone else suffer from this? Is it a result of bad training (I was forced to do knee tormenting stretching a few years ago), or am I just getting on in life (I'm 20)." If you have knee pains at 20, something is wrong. Do not ignore! See competent physician (orthopod, preferably with knee interest). The differential diagnosis is wide and treatment may vary enormously so do not rely on Internet advice. FWIW, being more twice your age I developed pains in my knees made much worse by skipping a rope and running on hard surfaces. I thought it was my menisci but turned out to be early arthritic changes on the underside of patellae. Eating vitamin E (400u), C (500mg) and glucosamine (500mg three times a day) has improved it greatly. This should not be read as constituting advice for you to do the same!
