The element of teamwork is very important. It gets real harry and if you get a little over zealous you may tend to forget who your partner is. The biggest hurdle is figuring out which techniques work better in a team type environment. The worst thing you can do is to hit your partner accidentally when your attack or deffense goes bad. The other thing is bumping into eachother, Zigging when you should Zag as it were. I found that vertical strikes worked best and also horizontal going away from your partner. The biggest skill that I feel can be learned is "how to defend your partner". Hope that helps. My little brother (he's 26 ;) is moving there in August (boo hoo hoooooo:( . He's been training with us for about 8 months now, and loves it. I'd like to see him continue in the arts as well, but I'm not sure what's available out there. I think he's pretty determined to continue in the JKD/Jun Fan, rather than switch to another style, although I've told him that if there's nothing nearby, to find any school/style that feels comfortable to him and can contribute to his learning. (Big Sister mode ;) any information is appreciated Thanks very much, :)jocelyne branwen@seascape.com ------------------------------ From: Alex France Date: 21 Jul 2000 12:07:05 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Two-on -Two with Sticks In the Vol 7, #355 issue, Loki wrote: >>But now I'm starting get serious about the prospect of two-on-two with a stick. The stakes are clearly higher. But what could be more to the point? *Is* it really that crazy? Has anyone tried it? At the Gathering or otherwise?<< It's not at all crazy. And yes, it's probably been tried by many. In the old Philippine Martial Arts Academy & Cultural Center, in Vallejo, CA, which housed several different FMA schools, Master John Bais, who taught his own family st yle of kali, drilled his students in this kind of combat. One strategy I particularly liked was where one team of two (representing friends or brothers in a real-live scenario) would fight back-to-back; and upon a pre-arranged non-verbal signal, the two would suddenly switch positions, and consequently, opponents. Oftentimes, this switch is initiated because one of the two is having difficulty dealing with his opponent; but the switch could also be used offensively to dispose of one or both opponents via surprise. ------------------------------ From: Mikal Keenan Date: 21 Jul 00 14:19:14 CDT Subject: eskrima: Knees & Things be careful re: advice that you follow regarding any aspect of your health. It doesn't take a Ph.D. to realize that someone can be a relative expert in something and not really know squat about something else, meanwhile giving out advice on everything. You can do all the yoga you want, lift all the weights that you want and still have crappy knees. First you must ID the real problem. It is "blind" to accept advice given in the blind, i.e., advice given without diagnosis. If your problem is chondromalacia patellae, weightlifting as an immediate answer may do more harm than good ... the issue is not quad strength, hip whatever, glutes or a hamstring no matter how good it may sound. The issue starts with insufficient lubrication beneath the patella before engaging in demanding activity and/or excessive demands (like "spinning"). Problems with alignment may not involve the hips or any musculature which crosses them ... said problems may begin with the feet or HEY, your SHOES. Follow someone's advice when they don't know the details of what you "present" and/or they have no trained expertise in dealing with said presentation and you may hurt yourself. This is not a case where just doing something will correct the problem. My concern here is for the case where the issue is chondromalacia because some of the responses provide suggestions which may cause more damage rather than relief. Get a solid Dx before you Rx my friend. diagnosis for cause before considering any treatment. The smarter way to fly. No offense intended towards anyone who provided responses by the way. I've studied and taught yoga, martial arts, etc. for 30 years. I've also done doctoral work in 3 fields. Just encouraging our colleague to find out the exact nature of the problem before trying to answer it. Following some folks' advice might yield a lucky success, or a disappointing hurt ... then the well-intentioned will have caused him damage. ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com. ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 13:47:13 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #355 Loki, Two-on-two does sound interesting, but I what about two-on-one? It seems to me that the zoning and immediate 3 second kill would have to take place as soon as sticks tap or else someone is going to be in for a bum weekend. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
