Don't take personally or consider directed at you what was offered as a "wake-up" in response to many offers of advice. Relax bud, there were a number of posts with advice ... my post was simply to say "Get a solid diagnosis before you start a treatment." ... and experiencing a problem repeatedly doesnt't qualify us to deal with said problem, perhaps more a sign of not having things in place to prevent it. I remember a black belt instructor that was leading a class through warmups one day who remarked that he'd had 3 knee surgeries ... you shoulda seen the way he warmed them up!!! Yow!!! Even after having torn them up. Like, "No wonder hombre!" He was a pretty good athlete and fighter but when it came to how to manage his machine, well ... My post was not in response to your individual post so lighten up muchacho. The info that I provided was in the spirit of "Caveat Emptor", not "baa, baaa". The informed consumer of advice and remedy is a more capable and effective consumer, not a sheep ... quite the contrary. I don't think that the recipient took it that way ... but he can speak for himself, eh? The important thing is that our colleague(s) should get well-informed professional advice. IMO that's -the- only important thing in this thread. Last year I was discussing my "nucleus" system, Tian Shan Pai, with some Chinese coworkers from the PRC. Tian Shan Pai was synthesized by a monk known as Hung Yun Lao Tze (Red Cloud) after travelling through much of China, learning all that he could re: various ways of fighting. He left his monastery due to a rivalry after being made the youngest fighting master. Returning to the Tian Shan area (Sino-Soviet border area) he started Tian Shan Szu where he taught Tian Shan Pai, a fighting-oriented system. The thread on Shaolin/Buddhist monks and fighting has made me curious to learn more about the role that Tian Shan played in Chinese history, i.e., such that a "patriotic" Chinese woman would say that "The Heroes of Tian Shan" has been her favorite story ever since childhood. Anyone here know about this? email direct to me if not appropriate for the FMA list (OK Ray?). Lo-o-o'ong time ago I read about a group in Washington state that was using Goretex ligament replacements to put athletes back into the game sooner. Anyone heard anything about or had any experience with that? I've noticed a few comments here re: experience with repairs made with cadaver ligaments ... but have never seen any comments on the use of other materials. Also, Crafty ... forgot to say "way to go" for defying/debunking the opinions of those "experts" ... exactly my point, very much akin to my earlier comments. BTW, my comment on doctoral study, teaching yoga/martial arts, etc. was to say that as informed as I might imagine myself to be :-) I do not criticize others' suggestions re: yoga, weightlifting, whatever ... just wanted to reinforce the suggestion that accurate diagnosis is first and foremost in dealing with any problem: gotta solve what needs to be solved, not what we think needs to be solved. Consider: A friend of mine has had tinnitus for a couple of years (and a history of migraine headaches) ... her trusted physician told her that he'd seen her symptoms many times and in his opinion she had a tumor pressing on her auditory nerve, might need to have her inner ear removed and prescribed diuretics to reduce fluid in her ear (Just throwin' stuff at the problema ... whoa bebbeh!). I encouraged her to get a more detailed diagnosis. Later MRI showed no tumor, saved her ear. Turns out both she and her mother may just have B vitamin deficiencies. They had both begun a "Let's try this and reevaluate in a month" treatment regimen but have now dumped that physician. Mother had numbness and tingling in hands & feet (B12). What I was encouraging was the avoidance of a haphazard approach. Identify the true nature of the problem. Identify an appropriate and effective answer. Apply the answer until you reach its logical conclusion. A fitting approach to many things in life :-) Be well, Mik ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com. ------------------------------ From: Sam Beckett Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 12:05:42 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Cold showers <<>> Turning the shower on COLD at the end is good for a number of things. When I was training in Shotokan in the mid 90's a Sensei of mine relayed that when we take a hot shower it opens up the pores, good for cleaning but not for health. By turning the shower on as cold as you can handle for a few minutes at the ens of a shower it closes the pores, preventing some types of viral illness. Since practicing this daily I can not recall having ANY cold type symptoms. Not to mention it is invigorating and makes the mind shut out the 'shock' with repetition. Mind control? Maybe. Feeling good? Definetly! Any feedback? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo!
