Seems like most of this entire year we're been light on good FMA discussion... Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 12:48:26 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Headgear A Howl etc: Concerning the question about headgear: In addition to comments already made, I would observe concerning the hockey headgear that the grill that protects the face can easily provide a lever that inadvertently (or "advertently" as the case may be) increases torsion on the neck. In my opinion NOT to be used if any sort of grappling is involved. As for sparring without grappling I do not have an opinion as to whether the tip of a stick shot could catch on it and torque the neck although certainly thrusts to the face should be ruled out with this gear. I do like them with easy going sparring or for training that allows contact. Concerning the WEKAF gear: They protect IQ pretty well and are light and thus are suitable for many uses. I would add that in my case I cut off the bib that has been attached with the idea of protecting the throat because I feel that it cultivates a very bad tendency to keep the chin up which IMHO is a really poor habit to cultivate-- you might have to fight without headgear some day. As for the risk of the throat shot, I don't think the bib serves much against a rising thrust (a #5 in Pekiti Tirsia) and for some reason fencing type thrusts don't get tried much against me or in the fights I've seen. As always, YMMV and the neck on the line is yours. Just my thoughts which are worth what you paid for them. All risks are yours, no suing etc. Woof, Crafty Dog ------------------------------ From: Justo370@aol.com Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 21:04:55 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #366 In a message dated 7/28/00 11:13:33 PM Eastern Daylight Time, eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << From: szorn@webtv.net (S ZORN) Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 15:01:03 -0500 (EST) Subject: eskrima: Head protection for stickfighting? I am going to buy some head protection for stickfighting and was hoping that I could get some opinions or recommendations. Should I go with a street hockey style helmet, a fencing mask, or something else? Also, can anyone provide some inexpensive sources for head protection? Any opinions, suggestions, or recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks, Steve >> I would not recommend a "fencing mask" because their is no real protection for the back of your head (especially if you duck, or turn inadvertently) and it may not be strong enough for hard blows to the head; a "street hockey-style helmet" may be a little stronger (by the way, is that similar to the ones used in lacrosse?); if you can't afford a Filipino helmet, why not just purchase a football helmet :-) In any event, make sure that whatever you finally purchase, you do not compromise your safety for expense. ------------------------------ From: "IESA" Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 21:43:45 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Mark Wiley and his new book Dear Members, Just a quick set of questions. In light of the soon to be released book by Mark Wiley on the secrets of Eskrima Serrada, I was just wondering if anyone has seen Mark Wiley move, either in a classroom setting or in a seminar/workshop setting. I haven't seen him or heard of anything public in California, or the entire US, for that matter. I've seen some people move, either in videos, seminars, or off the internet, but I haven't seen his moves. Another question is does anyone know who backs him or recognizes him for his skills? We don't hear much about him here in SF, aside from him publishing a couple books and such. Considering some Masters under the late Grandmaster Angel Cabales have taken the art to new levels, either at home or abroad, I was just wondering if others have recognized the skills of Mark Wiley. If he is an authority, then surely he won't stand alone. Thank you, Arigato, Daw Jeh, Mahalo, Salamat!!! It's a really safe bet to say everyone, no matter the level, came away learning something from the San Jose Gasshuku seminar. If they didn't they would be either lying to themselves or didn't look from many angles or within. Am so glad I went, got to meet Guro Mike Inay and son Jason (hey it's me Phil! :) that one seminar was my main focus. Another highlight was watching Jason battle full blast (w/padded weapons) against the "Samurai" stylist in tourney fashion. They were using various length weapons each round. It was when he got the double sticks the crowd started hyperventilating- a quick fake like by the his opponent but Jason immediately went in a blazin' , the guy turned his back even and I don't need to tell you the rest. wha-bap bap-bap!! Thrilling! The balance of the round was far more interesting as the game plan was now set. Yes in real life with real blades the opponent would be ma-ke (dead) already but this is sport. The opponent was armed with a very long weapon representing the blade, forgot the name. There was the problem for the eskrimador I think because the training doesn't involve such a weapon or even targets (read on)? Anyways, that guy got in two major FAST sweeps and if translated in real life would mean chopping the leading foot off. Ouch. Man it was smokin' fast strikes from like extra largo range cause of the weapon. Not that there were no counters mind you! I'm glad we're just talking sport too. And call me crazy but I want to try some Muay Thai beginning classes if they will take me, handicap and all. $10 a shot, just want the basics right now, know never will be a cung le or whatever. But I definitely need to augment my training w/more stick & knife, etc. too that my real love. PT, Lameco, Inayan, I gotta' find somewhere in the city is all. This is it, the rest of my life, my only shot from here out. Try to make best I can just can't rush things. Thanks for this list to be able to share thoughts and dreams and read others too. Best regards to all of you!
