I really got flamed for that, except for Mr. Defensor, who simply said it's his business, which I respect. Back then, Sam Beckett puffed: > Not only mouths, but with the electronic medium >people can remain anonymous in their subversion >without the need for the stones to back it up. Well, I didn't care to answer then, but I will now: I'm Rudolf Kimbel, Reichenberger Str. 62, 10999 Berlin, Germany, and welcome ANY type of discussion you want. I'm on this list since 1996, used to sign with Rudolf Kimbel while my e-mail was 100432.650@compuserve.com, now I sign Rudolf with Kimbel@debitel.net as my e-mail adress. I thought one could figure out... Now, Mr. Beckett goes girl bashing: ( in response to Meghan Gardners post ) > What is the purpose for going out 'on the town' >trying to represent something you are not? Certainly >you don't believe that this mode of dress would make >you all look 'tough', and if you do why?. I can't even though when I 'dared' to question Mr. Defensors title, he puffed: >about. Who should be concerned what another person is >or isn't? These people are only supporting their own Well, Mr. Beckett, Mr. Defensor is a respected Person in the FMA community. I never questioned his achievment, few people have what it takes to set up their own respected system. But you didn't care to understand my post, or try to find out who I am. You just lived out your fantasy of Mr. Defensor needing your protection. Now, Ms. Meghan Gardner is also a respected person in the FMA, especially for setting up womens programs showing the need for women to be strong and stand their ground. I would rate her importance as high as Mr. Defensor's, even though being on the other side of the earth, I never had the chance to meet either of them. About Meghans plan to have some fun, Mr Beckett wrote: > I don't mean to sound so derogatory, help me > understand what purpose you wish to serve. Ms. Gardner Is doing a REAL GOOD JOB serving the female FMA community. If she wants to have some fun with the women taking part in her course, that's her fun. (Even though I'd like to be there too :) To me, Mr. Beckett wrote: >"In the land of the blind the one eyed are Kings!" I guess, you will be with the poeple. My personal favorite is the recurved edge (Benchmade Delta Raider, Walter Brend designs ). I have a custom bladesmith working on one right now. Looks good on paper, my wallet hopes it looks good firsthand. My second favorite is the tanto design. I like the drop point tanto a lot, but generally carry the Cold Steel Kobun in serrated. In regards of Mark Willie's skills, he is pretty talented man. He visited me in the Philippine last Nov. I introduce him to a lot of master in Eskimo and Hilt Masters, for him to interview. I have him on tape playing around with the stick with some of the master in Abecedario, he is pretty good actually, look like Great Grandmaster Angel Cabales did a good job on him. Quick post: I received lots of E-mail to my last Announcement. I received a lot of interest in Buno and Hilot part of our System. E-mail me if anyone interested to learn Hilot, I am thinking to open the door to everyone who wanted to learn/help me to promote the Hilot to the masses. Well I usually offer this on the Garimot Advance Students only. I would like to see how many out there are interested to learn more about the Hilot and Buno? Just an interesting sideline to discussing an individual's skills in a public forum, but when I was speaking with Tony Diego (of Kali Illustrisimo) in Manila a couple years ago, he told me that Mark Wiley had come to their place on one of his research trips and wanted to spar. Again, according to Tony, they bashed him around so severely that he was covered with bruises, and then he basically told them he wanted to immediately learn their style, because he couldn't deal with them with what he had! Is that a comment on the skills of Mark Wiley, the effectiveness of serrada or the normal boasting of one style vs. another? I don't know. I just throw it out there for everyone to think about. By the way, I don't know anything about serrada, nor have I ever studied Kali Illustrisimo- I have no opinion either way! Jason writes: >hehe Thanks Phil for the compliment. Certainly. As I recall there was a call for volunteers to "spar" that guy. Silence filled the gym. Then all eyes went stage right to see who met to the challenge? (one guess who everybody :) Kudos (or no fear! as we say elsewhere) >The style or sport they were advocating was Chambara, as they put it "the closest you can get to REAL Japanese Sword Fighting". Interesting. I wonder if they've seen what Chad or the Dog Bro's do for fun. >Anyways, the weapons are really more like pillows Yep, the danger exists only in the practitioners minds. The ultimate mind-___? What's the next level, virtual sparring with a computerized opponent? Not knocking what they practice for sport, it was wicked fast, and I don't know what they do privately for self-defense training. Maybe that why they used the pillows publicly. What I found REALLY interesting were the striking and avoidance drills, basic as they were for the demo time constraints. I will try them out too! For those not in attendance, a pair squared off. Weapons raised. (Ok, pillows raised.) Then one would take a major swipe at the other's gut, or knee or foot (one at a time). The opponent would either suck in the gut to avoid, or step back for the knee strike, or lift the foot for the foot strike. Then it's his turn to take a swing. Back and forth drilling until you could almost not keep up with the swings/evasion/counter! Ok another Jason story ;) Loved your focus man, you saw the target and "cut" his knee like half a dozen times - until it was said to shoot for the foot instead! It was great fun watching, you just kept "scoring" on him and he kept taking it. Why the guy didn't move his knee or even flinch to block out of instinct - I guess that is one danger of these pre-determined drills, complacency? Hmm, maybe I won't practice them and pick up potentially very bad habits for eskrima. The intention was to hone the reflexes though IMO but that just a guess. And speaking of training with intention, thank you for instructing me on focusing my strikes, I need it! Great time. Next time I get your dad to ride my skate :) Phil ps. that guy breaking the wood plank on his head is nuts, did you see that!?! wouldn't give up hitting himself!?!!?? NUTS pss. was watching that Sensei Hoshino sharpening his sword. his knuckles were out of this world vicious looking, no doubt due to years and years of makiwara training. I seem to remember hearing a story (mayhap through one of the Dog Brothers), that Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje was playing around with some of his senior students, and began designing forms, and performing Karenza with a Stick and a Taser (the type that doesn't fire out a charge, but requires the victim to be touched by the base unit); he adapted Espada Y Daga techniques, and started coming up with strike flows. Apparently, he did that as the result of a playful challenge that Pekiti-Tersia was sufficiently broad a system, that it could accentuate and develop weapon skills with any weapon, ancient or modern. A student had a taser lying around, and GT Gaje started fooling around. This story, for me, lent credence to the theories that the FMA maximize efficient body motion, and therefore, translate to many modern weapons, because the principles of combat remain the same. I also like the fact that apparently, GT Gaje was able to start modifying the traditional knife angles and strikes, to adapt to the characteristics of a HTH taser. Of course, GT Gaje wouldn't have a problem doing that, but it's a nice check mark for the FMA that they are so versatile. Best wishes to all! A certificate is just a fancy piece of paper. In this case several people were trusted to complete their training after paying their $ and receiving their piece of paper.
