Fung,D.D.S." Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 02:15:17 -0700 Subject: eskrima: best headgear The best headgear IMHO is homemade. Streethockey stuff if loud when you get hit in it. The facemask has holes that are too big and the wooden dagger goes through as do shards of wood. WEKAF headgear feels too heavy and the face mask has gaps that are too big for the thin wood blade dagger. The base of the helmet is reinforced plastic boxing headgear and it is not comfortable on your skin as it rubs and is turned etc.. Both need extra mesh on the face plate for eye protection. Fencing masks have a problem in that they survive the first hit then roll off your head. you can pinch them really tight and they stay but then you get a headache from the pinch and the ear get all grated up. When the fencing mask spins on your head you get cheese grated too. I have never got one to really fit me well. Fencers movement may be less extreme than ours and perhaps this is the reason for the funny single purpose fit. I do not think any mask gives you more or less of a hit unless there is alot of padding. These are all the same until you get to a hard shell. However the hardshell must be supported by foam or you get the support points drilled into your head. This is not more protection infact there should be a special dog brother designation for those willing to spar until there are dents in your head. Lexan faceplates are for incidental not intentional contact. They can split if they are too brittle I have broken them on others. However the type of lexan for riot shileds is the best. It can yield and not fracture. Lexan masks fog up! The best heagear IMHO factoring comfort/impact absorbtion/lightweight is taking a "leather" boxing headgear and sowing it into an extra large fencing mask so they become one unit. The leather is soft and does not eat ears and rub off your skin after many rounds unlike plastic headgear. The fencing mesh is stong but light and resists training blades. The mesh dents easily to let you know you have been hit and the headgear foam is of a density to let you know you have been hit but not yield like having a pillow on your head. There is mild throat protection to protect from the errant blow but you will know if you have been hit there. Also if you tuck your chin with a fencing mask on it tends to ride up on the throat collar so you have a tendency to fight with your chin up...very bad. The headgear holds the mask in the right place so you have the right head position. Finally, you can hose these off after a workout and let them dry with no damage. Carlton H. Fung,D.D.S. However I believe that the instructor has a duty to discuss the legal implications of having to defend yourself>>. Respectfully, I would say that students should be taught that self-preservation is not self-defense. Self-defense is awareness. Fighting means you have already lost. The courtroom is just the aftermath of continued loosing. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. Eric and Ed "Hot Dog" came out, and Kalani Grimm came up from Las Cruces. We only fought one day, but good fights. Not a lot of ground fighting but grappling at 7000 ft. can suck the juice right out of you. There were a number of good finishes on the ground (personally, I can say a stick in the arm pit can briefly change your view of the world) and ,as usual, lots of swinging and kicking. We'll be doing another in Nov. Anybody interested in coming give me a yell. (I try to keep it around 10 guys or so) Arlan ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 16:42:28 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Good technicians/fighters Below is an excert of an interview from Matt Thorton at Straight Blast Gym. I ran across it and found this particular reply intresting. What do you guys think about it? >Interviewer: >What about those that say you can be a good teacher and a good >technician without necessarily being a good fighter. >Matt Thorton: >Thats nonsense. Think about it... how can you be a good technician if >you can't fight? It doesn't make any sense! You don't say... hey that >guy is a good boxing technician... but when he spars he just gets >mauled everytime. Or that wrestler is a good technician, but his >takedowns suck... or that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu guy is a good >technician, but he cant fight on the ground at all. If you said that >you would sound insane! But people say that in JKD all the time. Its >nonsense. Another in a long line of myths. You can be a tough fighter >without being technical, due to size or strength, etc. But you cannot >be a good technician without being able to fight, its impossible. Its >similar to when people tell me they think I have taken the art out of >martial arts... that its all about fighting only with us... I reply, >art of what? If it doesn't work... where the hell is the art! You see >the art is in the performance, the doing... the well timed punch, the >flawless takedown, the perfectly executed armbar... etc. Thats art. >Like Tiger Woods swing, Michael Jordan's lay up... etc. Thats real >art. The rest... the rest is just looking fancy in front of people who >dont know any better... its not really art at all. Art is in the >performance! ...so many myths. Chad writes: It's true that people won't admire a basketball players form of his jumpshot if he doesn't make the basket, but still people will admire good technicians or good teachers that have never fought. No knocks on anyone here, because I still feel that certain things can be taught without having been done by that person. Sometimes I show the lighter fighters(100 lbs. under me) some of things that James does when he fights, because they have a closer weight similarity. Just throwing it out there, what do you guys think about it. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? All we need to prove a theory incorrect is find a counterexample, right? Angelo Dundee wasn't a great fighter but he was an excellent boxing coach. Need we go any further? :) Ok, someone is gonna try to say that a boxer isn't a fighter. Not sure where to begin with someone like that.?.?. What he is probably thinking of is the person that totally sucks as a fighter or technican. One of Cacoy's stories about the very well known Saavedras... One of the three was perhaps the best Eskrimador of his time (the 1930s), yet he could not teach. One of the others was an excellent teacher, yet he could not fight. I see no reason to disagree with someone like Cacoy...
